At the Lupercalia festival, the gods drew lots to see who their bride for the year would be. Mars was paired up with Hubris, the personification of pride in excess. At first, Mars did not think he'd like having such a silly, frivolous thing as his bride. But she soon proved herself useful. Wherever she went, she inspired pride to the point of reckless abandon. This inevitably caused people to want to go to war to prove their greatness. This meant more honor for Mars. From then on, wherever Hubris went, smiling and dancing, War was sure to follow.
