Description Daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne.
One of the nine Muses, goddesses of the arts.
She was the Muse of Epic Poetry, science in general and eloquence and the oldest and wisest of the Muses, she is sometimes considered their queen.
She is represented by a maiden figure with a majestic air, crowned with laurels and adorned with wreaths, seated in an attitude of meditation, with a scroll of parchment in one hand and a quill in the other.
Her children by Ares are respectively the founders of the Thracian tribes known as the Mygdones, Edones, Bistones, and Odomantes.
Calliope also had two famous sons with Apollo, Orpheus and Linus. She taught Orpheus verses to sing. According to Hesiod, she was the wisest of the Muses, and the most assertive. She is believed to have defeated the daughters of Pierus, king of Thessalonia, in a singing contest, and then, to punish their presumption, turned them into Magpies.
Calliope Beach in Antarctica is named after the Musa, as is the calliope hummingbird of North and Central America.
With Apollo she generated: Orpheus and Lino.
With Ares she generated: Mygdon, Edonus, Biston and Odomantus.
