Brother of Thanatos and Hypnos.
In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman of Hades, who carries the souls of the newly dead over the waters of the River Styx and Acheron, which divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay him for the journey, usually an obol or danaka, was sometimes placed in or over the mouths of corpses, in accordance with ancient Greek funerary tradition.
Those who could not afford the sum, or those whose bodies had not been buried, had to wander the shores for a hundred years.
