Description

Scáthach ~ The Shadowy One ~ The legendary Scottish warrior & Goddess who trained the Ulster hero Cú Chulainn and who resided on the Isle of Skye in her Fortress Dún Scáith or Fortress of Shadows.

Warriors who wished to be trained by Scáthach had to first gain entry to the fortress, which was no mean feat, situated on an island and surrounded by obstacles, most warriors failed.

She trained both her sons, Cet and Cuar inside a huge old Yew tree.

Scáthach's daughter, Uathach, guarded the gates to the fortress but was defeated by Cú Chulainn who then gained entry and insisted that he be trained by Scáthach.

Cú Chulainn went on to defeat Scáthach's sister Aoife and forced her to make peace with her sister. He also later received Scáthach's deadliest weapon, a barbed spear, The Gáe Bulg as well as an invitation into Scáthach's bed, as a reward for completing his training.

Scáthach later became known as the Celtic queen of the dead, taking the souls of slain warriors on the battlefield and guiding them to paradise, Tír na nÓg.

A quick note to say thank you to @sadbh.aine on Instagram who suggested doing a Scáthach piece to me, as The Shadowy one is commonly forgotton, with most attention instead being given to her student Cú Chulainn.

Really enjoyed learning about this legend and there is plenty more out there for anyone else interested to know more!
