A boy wakes up to find himself in a room. It isn't a particularly big room, but he wouldn’t exactly call it small either. It looks like a cellar of some sort, with no apparent doors or windows to speak of, and only one light bulb dangling from the ceiling. He pushes his brown mop of hair out of his eyes and stands up. Looking around, he spots a girl staring at him. She has a strange look of fear on her face. Her shadow splays out behind her, covering the wall. Feeling that something was off, James realizes- with a small twinge of... loss?- that he lacks a shadow of his own. “How peculiar.” says James. “And who are you?” he asks the girl out of courtesy, rather than any real desire to know.

The girl tries to respond, but finds that nothing escapes her throat. Reeling back in shock, she tries again. And again. And again. Each attempt is more forceful than the last, until she is screaming at the top of her lungs. Still nothing. Tears streaming down her face, she begins to pound against the wall, the muffled thumping of her hands the only sound she seems able to make. James watches her for awhile, contemplating his situation. A boy missing a shadow, and a girl missing a voice.

    How... peculiar.
