Short Story:

“Just a little more.” She said to herself.

Ever since that broken pocket watch came into her shop, Matida became more and more curious about it. She couldn’t explain it, but something about that watch fascinated her. It was clearly missing cogs, yet somehow it seemed to work just fine. Three days have passed since she first tinkered with it, yet she seemed no closer to figuring out its secrets.

After yet another all-nighter, Matilda got up from her workbench to open up her shop, sluggishly walking to the door while rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. Suddenly she saw smoke all around her. She turned and realized it was coming from the pocket watch. As she reached for it, the smoke became thicker. She cuffed the watch in her hand.

“W-what the heck is going on?” she thought. Almost in an instant she was teleported from her workshop to a large building surrounded by a forest. A hindered questions raced in her mind, although none more prominent than why she was suddenly wearing completely different, revealing clothes.

Matilda wandered around the area, taking in the scenery. She noticed other girls around the building, each wearing similar looking clothing to her. Moments later, a girl floated over to her, wearing a big smile on her face. “Hey there, newbie!” the girl said, “My name’s Rainyday, but my close friends call me Rain. What’s up?”

“Um… yeah, hi. My name’s Matilda, but everyone calls me Tilly.” She responded. She immediately followed up with a question. “How’d you do floating like that?”

“Well that’s obvious,” Rain said “I’m a genie, just like you and every other girl here.”

“I’m a… what?”

“Hmm… yours is a pocket watch I see. I guess you come from a steampunk world then” Rain said “Keep it close. It could be your greatest source of magic…” And under her breath she added “…or your prison…”

“P-prison?” Matilda thought. She raised an eyebrow. Before she could think about asking questions, the sound of a bell was heard all throughout the area
Rain grabbed Matilda’s arm and ran towards the building, dragging her along. She turned to her and smiled. “Oh, by the way, welcome to BreakBuild Institute for the magically gifted”
