Description
Spectember 2023 - Day 27
This timeline is pretty similar to ours, with just a few different creatures being preserved in the fossil record.
Where one day will be called the Bauru Group, an interesting creature thrived in more vegetated areas, the Leosaurus alium (“other lion lizard”).
This large heterodontosaur (estimated 2m long and 15kg) is believed to be an herbivorous dinosaur, feeding on leaves, twigs, roots and seeds while the small tusks might have been used in intraespecific display. The arms were short and the legs long, characteristics that allied with a long and muscular tail made them fast runners.
One of the remarkable characteristics of this dinosaur was the dense covering of filamentous integumentary structures, believed to be homologous to primitive feathers. Some specimens, specially the holotype, presented a longer and more developed covering on the head and neck, similar to a mane (granting them the name of “lion lizard”). The function of this structure is unknown, but since some fossils lack the mane it is believed to be some kind of sexual dimorphism.
Leosaurus are a remarkable find, expanding the time range of the Heterodontosauridae to the Late Cretaceous and the geographical distribution to eastern South America.
Note: creating a dinosaur out of a username is hard (based on my Reddit's username Another_leo), fortunately mine has “leo” in it and even though it did not came from the animal (neither the zodiac sign), it was a good base to start working on.
