Description This is a rank chart showing the insignia for the ranks used by the CCDF, the navy of the Interstellar Consortium in my sci-fi.  The Consortium is one of the most powerful members of the United Earth Alliance, and is a direct successor of the International Consortium, the power which first discovered jump travel, settled the oldest extra-solar colonies, and helped found the United Earth Alliance.

In-Universe:
The CCDF has a rich and distinguished history longer even than that of the United Earth Navy.  By tradition, individual ships are sponsored by one or more Consortium member; sponsoring members name the ship, have their livery integrated into the ship's hull print, and contribute a majority or at least a plurality of the ship's crew and funding.  The original CCDF was composed of French, British, Japanese, Italian and German ships and personnel in mostly-equal measure, with smaller Consortium members such as Canada, Australia, Spain, Singapore and the Netherlands contributing fewer or jointly sponsoring others.  As the navy of the first power to discover and develop jump travel, the CCDF underwent radical transformations in the early decades ADH, developing into one of the most powerful and capable forces of the early Diaspora, just as the Consortium became the leading superpower of its age.

The Consortium underwent paroxysmal change in the crucible of the Jovian War.  As the leading member of the United Earth Alliance fighting the League of Humanity on all fronts, the Consortium's members unified even as their ruling governments and royal families fled to their colonies.  Post-War, with the Unification of Old Earth on the cards, the Consortium's colonies, bound together by common bonds and interests, reformed the Consortium along colonial lines, bringing the ships and men of the CCDF with them.

Today, the CCDF is composed chiefly of ships and personnel from the worlds of Malinché, Atlantaea, Mandalay, San Bartolomé, Venice and Aachen.  It has historically been the joint-most powerful navy of the Alliance Grand Council members, alongside the Sector Earth Authority Navy.  The United Earth Navy, the naval arm of the Alliance itself, has recently outstripped both the CCDF and SEAN, its ranks swollen by its success in the Inter-Solar Wars.  As with the UEN, which it operates with in large part, the CCDF is a battleliner navy, favouring formations of starships-of-the-line supported by cruiser, escort and corvette elements.

The CCDF chiefly draws its rank structure from European militaries, rather than the British or American which have influenced others.  As with the UEN, the title 'Captain' is only ever applied to people in command of civilian vessels; 'Commander' is only ever applied to those in charge of military vessels, hence why the CCDF does not use the rank of Captain.  In the CCDF, only officers in command of a ship are ever addressed just as 'Commander'; other officers are always addressed with their full rank or a diminution of it ('Flights', 'Staffs' and 'Groups' are the most common).
