Description
Annie wiggled her toes inside of me as she shifted her leg. I was suspended in air, only held by the bare foot that was filling me. I could tell she was nervous. I felt damp from some of the sweat that was making its way into my sole.Annie was my best friend. We had known each other almost our whole lives. Today, she had an interview for a paralegal position at the law firm of her dreams. I was a bit further in my legal career, closer to becoming a partner at the firm I was employed at. For me, this interview would've been a breeze. For her, this was her big break.
The night before, I was at her apartment helping her prepare. When we took a break for dinner, she pulled out her phone and started googling some stuff. "You know, I've been reading about some spells online that might be able to help..."
I cut her off. "Enough of this magic crap, Annie. You're better than that. You know that isn't real." She looked a little hurt. For most of her life she'd always been interested in the occult. I wasn't exactly on the same page as her, but humored her when she needed it.
"Well, look, it's just a spell to link to people together. Someone can possess a personal object that belongs to another, and through contact they can share thoughts, feelings and emotion. With something like this and with you by my side, I'd easily nail that interview."
I sighed. "Look, for starters, I'm not going to help you cheat. Second, you have to stop with this fantasy crap. You are on the path to such a prestigious career. You need to start leaving these ideas behind you." Normally I'd play along, but she was starting to cross a line.
"Fine... Look, I think we're done practicing for the night. Whatever happens tomorrow happens. But I hope you know how much I appreciate the work you've done. I know I'll have you by my side." I shrugged and agreed, deciding to go home for the night.
After I left, Annie sat on the side of her bed. She grabbed one of her black heels from her closet, the one she planned to wear to the interview tomorrow. Looking back at her phone, she held the spell she had researched online. "A possession spell.." she read aloud. "...Hold the object of your desire in hand. Think of the soul whom you wish to connect. Through contact, you shall be one." Below that was a series of words in an ancient language. One that, to the lack of my knowledge, she had been studying for years.
Annie put the phone down and held the high heel. It was a little scuffed and the insole was definitely worn in. However, they looked professional enough for the interview tomorrow. Annie's nose scrunched a little from their smell. If she gets the job, the first thing she's buying is some new shoes.
She closed her eyes and began to focus, thinking of the words she read on her phone. She concentrated hard, holding the shoe close in her hands....
When I walked into my house, I turned the lights on and kicked my shoes off at the door. I put some food down for the cat and crashed on the couch, ready to watch some TV before going to bed. Oddly enough though, I began to feel a deep sense of tiredness taking over my whole being. I tried to get off the couch to make it up, but the lightheadedness took over. I quickly passed out.
I had very, very strange dreams. Ones where I was small and being held by some giant. I heard a lot of clicking and clacking, like heels on a pavement. I felt like I was being filled by some other entity. Something weighing at least a thousand pounds continued to push into me. However, it didn't hurt. It just felt more natural than anything else.
My vision was blurry in the beginning, but as time went on it began to clear up. I was trying to shake myself off to wake up, but the strange thing was that I couldn't. It started to feel more... real.
I felt something wiggle inside me as the movement stopped. Suddenly I was lifted high into the air as a giant held me. I was lifted even further up until I was face-to-face with a skyscraper-sized Annie. She looked relieved. "Oh thank god! You woke up! I was worried you were dead!"
"Dead...?" I thought. She looked even more relieved after I thought that. "Oh good, it worked! I hear your thoughts! Look, we don't have much time. I'm in an alley right outside the firm. I'm going into my interview. I need your help, ok? The spell worked. I promise it will be quick and I'll get you back right after."
"Annie! What the fuck! Am I your fucking shoe? Turn me back for Christ's sake!" She ignored my cries as she dropped me carefully back on the ground and shoved her foot back into me. As she walked, I continued a pattern of being lifted into the air and slammed back down. Each step caused an audible, feminine click to come from me. I couldn't believe I was a fucking high heel. On the sidewalk, I could hear other shoes walking past me. I probably blended right into the crowd.
Eventually Annie walked into the building. Through muffled speech, I heard her talking with a woman who was most likely a receptionist. She began walking a bit more and sat down. I could've sworn I heard the receptionist say "I love those heels, by the way!", but it was hard to tell. Focusing was getting more difficult.
We continued sitting here. Annie would occasionally fidget, her sweaty toes adjusting themselves to get comfortable. "Look," she began, "I promise I'll make this up to you. I can't imagine how you must be feeling. But whatever happens, I'll make it even. Promise."
"Annie, I just want to be human again, ok? That's how you make it even." I wanted to yell at her, but I was worried about what would happen if she didn't do well in this interview. At this point, my only option was to focus and try to help her where I could.
"Here's the plan," she began in her thoughts. "For each question they ask, if I need your help, I'll..." she thought for a sec "...I'll pop my heel. That's your cue to tell me the answer. I promise I'll only do it when I need."
Before I could respond, I heard a man's voice from across the room. "Ann?"
Annie quickly stood up and introduced herself. This must have been the partner she was interviewing with. As she walked into the office where the interview would begin, I tried to focus. The interview started with small talk. Annie introduced herself, told him about some of her education experience. She sounded bubbly and confident. Despite all of this, I was genuinely proud of her.
The interview carried on. "So, tell me how you would handle a case for a client in this situation?" He began to rattle off some complicated case details. Annie was definitley nervous as she began to fidget.
When he stopped talking, I felt myself lifted into the air as she crossed her leg. My heel popped off as a reprieve of fresh air hit me. This was my time.
I tried to formulate a response. I knew the answer to this. But... something stopped me. As I was held there, dangling by Annie's toes, I just... couldn't think of what to say. "I.... uh.... um...." Oh god. Annie last night had mentioned the sharing of thoughts and emotion. I think Annie's stress was overpowering my confidence. I couldn't think straight at all.
"What the hell are you doing?" she asked me in her thoughts. I could feel her frustration and stress growing further. "Annie I... I don't know. I'm... I'm just as nervous as you right now!"
Annie shoved her foot back down onto the ground. I would've winced if I could. She attempted to answer the question, but I could tell by his response that he wasn't impressed.
The interview wrapped shortly after. When it was done, I heard Annie shuffling to grab her things and walk away. She remained quiet as she made her way back to the apartment. I instead tried to focus on all of the clicking and clacking coming from me with each step. It was meditative to some degree.
When she walked through the door, I was hoping she'd turn me right back. Instead, she angrily kicked me off. I flew through the air until I hit the wall and fell to the ground. I was left feeling damp with a stale odor eminating off of me. I tried to talk to her, but without the contact my thoughts were left to the void.
I thought I could hear her crying at one point. I was worried about her. Despite the situation, I wanted her to succeed. I felt bad I let her down.
Eventually she padded over to me. I got a glimpse of her feet. She picked me up and faced my insole towards her so we could talk "face-to-face".
"I'm... I'm sorry." She said through tears. "I was reading the spell on how to change you back. I.... I can't do it unless your 'purpose' was fulfilled. The point of this was to nail the interiew. I bombed it. I was angry and wanted to leave you like this a little longer. But... You didn't serve your purpose and therefore... I can't change you back."
I was getting terrifed. I wanted to scream, but before I could, I felt another calmness wash over me.
"If I can't change you back, I'll at least try to make your existence more comfortable. I've cast a spell of acceptance over you. It should... make your mind adapt to your new form. I promise I'll try to find a way back for you but until then... I'll take care of you."
I began to relax. My owner looked sad, but I knew how much better she'd feel once she was wearing me. I made her so confident. That's why she wore me so much. I made her feel... complete.
She placed me back down. I nestled into myself, sitting amongst all of my other shoe friends. She said some more words, but I didn't quite understand them. I was just... at peace. Whatever I was before didn't matter. I was a shoe, and we were in this together.
To be continued...
