For this Chicago photo, we have the skeleton of the universally loved big cat whose famous saberesque fangs pierced the throats of camels, horses, young bison, and mastodon and columbian mammoth calves. And as you may have guessed from the darkened bones, the roars of this particular specimen that rang throughout the savannah-like habitat of Pleistocene Los Angeles and had once induced fear in its aforementioned prey, and anger in its competition (American Lions, Short Faced Bears, and Dire Wolves) became roars of desperation and terror as it struggled in vain to free itself from the La Brea Tarpits' iron grip. What followed was a slow death by starvation before sinking beneath the viscous, geologic goop.
