HERE THEY ARE: THE BLUE VELVETTES:

[link]

I never expected to get off on this tangent but fan feedback has suggested that I am on to something.

There is a particular female TYPE that appears over and over again in comics and animation. In this case I shall let their similarity speak for itself.

This is the Junior Japanese Division of the Blue Velvets.

From right to left (as in manga format) these are:

Hikari (AKA Dawn) from "Pokemon"

Tomoyo Daidouji from "Card Captor Sakura"

Tsukyomi from "Moon Phase"

Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Saturn) from "Sailor Moon"

They're just so darned CUTE!

I could go on for paragraphs on just how weird and unnatural it is to inhabit Japan with characters with hair colors not found in nature. All of these girls have blue hair and blue eyes. This is a printing convention inherited from the days of blue-haired Superman. However, if you look at these characters in black and white, they all resolve into the Japanese aesthetic ideal of what makes a perfect girl. They have dark sleek hair, pale skin and liquid eyes that you could lose the stars in.

BTW: This is a bit of a new style for me. By printing the blue line sketch directly on an existing background I save a great deal of production time. This image is very similar to a painted cel. I may actually start doing real cels.

Nice girls, but I was a bit thrown by your naming them from right to left; I thoght it was the other way and was a bit puzzled by sailor saturn having that funny cap and a Pokemon mouth...

What disturbs me about the Pokemon "style" are those oval eyes and egg-shaped irises.

It's all a part of the consistent over-cuteness; as usual the villains are the most enjoyable...
