Stylemys is one of the most common fossils found in the Brule Formation of South Dakota. It is an extinct tortoise that probably burrowed in the manner of the modern gopher tortoise. This restoration is not a taxidermy mount but rather a very detailed recreation of what this creature would have looked like based on a cast of an actual fossil carapace. The head and extremities are based on living analogs. The fine paint job makes this display look as though it might crawl away at any moment. It can be seen at the visitor center at the Badlands National Park.
