Description

Throwing this entry in last minute. I was so busy I thought I couldn't make it.

This is my design entry for TLK Design Contest

Hope you like it.

Anyways, sry about the janky anatomy. I don't draw lions that much.

I doodle a headshot in the corner because ... no reason. I just made that doodle at work and I want to finalize it into something.

Here are some thoughts behind this design:

  • I want him to be muscular, large, and silky fur, considering he is a prince so he must have access to a lot of food. More food means more nutrients, which means better body condition.
  • I made his fur color lighter at the paws because I wanted to play with the idea "everything the light touches is my kingdom". Since he is the golden child, he will feel entitled to everything. Having lighter colored paws is like having the light on his paws, everything he touches is supposed to be his.
  • I want a dirt color palette for the overall because I thought that if the lions believe in the circle of life, then they know they will one day be one with the earth. And maybe in their culture, having this color means they hold the power of the land, and thus power of their ancestors! Also dirt color means better blending in the environment = being a better predator.
  • I add a little weird strand on his mane to make him look like his half-brother.
  • Eye color is the same as his half-brother. I thought of a scene where Mbali (or other character) might comment how different the prince and Raz are. Their eyes look the same but could give other such different feelings. One with kindess, and one of endless greed and anger.
  • There's also an alternate design with body paint. I thought of war paint in tribes. Maybe he does that on his pelt to make him look more powerful. Or maybe that's part of the pride culture. Or just add some difference to stand out among other lions.
