That's some pretty excessive anti-aliasing there.
You certainly don't need that much, and it can actually end up hurting your sprite if you do that.
Here it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, except on the pattern on its back.
Which, by the way, makes it look like it pops out.
Now, I don't really know what you were going for with it, but it would blend in much smoother if you did not add the second shade to it.
That's just my two cents for some crit. You can take it or leave it, doesn't really matter.
It is still a very nice sprite with a goo design and smooth lines.

ok, thanks, but this has never steered me wrong before and people seem to like my sprites, and i usually don't do it if i think that it looks stupid

I actually agree with Mewchild on this. While the rest of the tutorial has good advice, I think the antialiasing is excessive, especially on the top of the head. Overantialiasing can start to look like pillowshading if done wrong. I get that it's your style and you probably don't get criticized much (this being deviantart, commenters are more inclined to praise than criticize). But the thing is, inexperienced spriters tend to latch on to whatever points of advice they can get, and "put shadow all around the outlines" is one of those things that can get habitual, when it's really just fostering poor technique.
Blah blah words! I like the fakemon and the rest of the tutorial is awesome. c:

I was just trying to be helpful. :I
I like to give pointers here and there for sprites.

Heh, okay, I thought you were all upset about it.
I did say it was a good sprite, and that the aa isn't a big deal on it.

Not to be demanding, but if you get the time, do you think you could do one of these for trainersprites too?

Light-Fox In reply to BlagdenWhiteRaven [2011-02-11 16:21:26 +0000 UTC]
hm, maybe, but i'm only good at splicing, not scratching trainers

That "putting shadows in every corner" next to the darker outlines is generally called anti-aliasing. It's a useful technique.
Anyways, very nice. I don't necessarily see how you can stick to the official style (hah, I tend to use way to much selective outlining sometimes. XD )
This should be able to help out a novice; it's quite simply explained and the results turned out great. However, perhaps there will be a few people who are like all, "o.o whoa liek why didnt mah pixel art turn out dat way...? o_o" but that happens.
By the way, that dino is probably best off if the darkest brown is just a little darker. Remember that you don't have to use the colors on the existing one exactly--feel free to change them around if needed--but it's nonetheless probably best to use an official one or two as a reference to how the shading and the selective outlining should turn out, like here. But, yeah.
