We meet Maul!

Who is Maul?

Well, he's a very old character of mine. As old as Scarfire- and Scarfire is, well, my oldest character really... What? Surprised it isn't Lightning?
Anyway, Maul was one of Scar's biggest enemies in his story (which was written many years ago and which will never see the light of day again).
He was a housecat, like Scarfire, but I decided to make him a black panther in this comic because I wanted him to look more intimidating.
When I first thought of introducing Scarfire into this comic, I also debated on whether or not to make him a "big cat" like a panther or a tiger or something- after all, he's such an old character that he's had many different iterations and has had many different appearances. I even thought of just making him a really tall housecat- kind of like what I did with Sylvia in this comic- but I ended up making him a regular-sized housecat. Why? Eh, it just felt right.

Anyway, back to Maul.
Maul's appearance has changed a bit since I first started drawing him as an anthropomorphic animal. I kept on debating on how many scars he should have, and if he should have mange or not (the original Maul had a bad case of mange). Eventually, I settled on this design which looks slightly different from how he looks on the title page of this chapter... but whatever. Both of his ears have small injuries, and he has a few small facial scars.
He does look a little similar to Scarfire since both have dark fur and scarred faces (and are both feline), but the two are not related.

Maul, in this comic, is a high-ranking member of The Crescent Clan. You may be wondering where his medallion is, and the answer is- it's tucked into his shirt. Maul, unlike other high-ranking members of the Crescent clan- does not have any special abilities or powers. He is a normal black panther. Nevertheless, he is quite strong, quite agile, and still very much a threat. He also wears special gloves which come with their own claws attached- so he can still stab people while wearing them. He's decent with a firearm, but he prefers fighting with claws and teeth- This is also the reason why he doesn't wear any footwear.

Personality-wise, Maul is a snob. He thinks he's better than everyone else because he's a big cannibalistic cat. He dresses nicely, unlike the rest of the Crescent Clan, because he wants to look better than everyone else. He's typically calm, cool, and collected- but certain people can really get under his fur. He is horrifically scary when angry. He's a lover of film noir movies, poetry, and Shakespearean plays, and will use quotes from poems or plays sometimes. He also uses metaphors often and speaks in riddles at times. Sometimes he almost seems like a normal guy- but then he'll say something completely unhinged and insane, which will remind you that he is a cannibal. He has a smoking habit. He hates weak people. He hates old people. He hates children. He hates "prey-animals" and believes they should all be devoured. The smell and sight of blood tends to make him say and do crazy stuff.

Scar and Maul have a bit of a history with each other- the details of which you will find out eventually... All you need to know right now is that Scar both hates and fears Maul, despite having powers which could easily destroy him. Maul despises Scarfire and wants to kill and eat him- in fact, that's probably his biggest goal in life. Maul calls Scarfire "housecat" in order to belittle him. He believes all housecats like Scarfire are "prey-animals" and are not worthy of the title of "cat". He also thinks big cats, like himself, are the best and he looks down upon all other species.

Strangely enough- or perhaps grossly enough?- Maul only dates women who he considers "weak", "fragile", or "prey". It is unclear if he also eats his dates...

Overall, Maul is a very evil man.

Also, Scarfire does not call Maul by a nickname.
