When you think you think it: She darted behind the square of rock. It was only a training exercise but she had to win. With the new leader board she had to do well. But right now they were pined down. She and York couldn't seem to get out with Maine and Wash firing like that. "I've got an idea." York said, peaking out only to bring his head back quickly. "Shoot." Carolina said. "I'll get their attention and you go ring the bell." Carolina stared at him. "What? That's crazy. You won't stand a chance." York shrugged and checked out again. "If one of us doesn't do something they'll be here and we'll both be screwed." "But..." She was cut off by him shoving her out of the way and taking a paint shot to the arm. He grimaced. "Go." He told her and went the opposite way to get Maine and Wash to follow him. She stayed for a split second, watching him go. He had just taken a shot for her. Something inside her stirred in a way she didn't know. Then she ran for the bell.
When you think you know it: "How'd it go?" York had been waiting in the shadows outside the debriefing room. North walked passed them to look for his sister. She watched him. "Fine but not for everyone." York glanced at the board just as the door closed. York went back to leaning against the wall. "She'll get over it." She doubted that. "I'm gonna get something to eat." She walked away, knowing he'd follow. "You okay?" She looked back at him. How did he always know? "Why wouldn't I?" She could still hold onto her pride. He raised his eyebrows. "You know she'll blame you. You don't like it when people don't like you." She kept walking. "I don't care what people think of me." She said. "Mumh" He didn't sound convinced. How had he gotten to know her so well? She was never open with people the way she was with York. Her head told her she shouldn't go down that road but her heart was telling her something too. She told herself she it wasn't that but she didn't actually know. Could it be?
When you can't bring yourself to say it: She sat by his bed. He looked so fragile with the bandage around his eye. She had been terrified when she had gotten to his side out there. She still was, even if they say he'd live. What if they decided he was unfit for duty? Then he would go away. No more long talks in the mess hall after everyone else went to bed. No one who understood the pressures on her. No one who would know her like him. No one to make her laugh like him. He stirred. His right eye cracked open. Then it closed again from pain. "Hey Lina. Couldn't stay away from my good looks?" His words were normal but his voice was groggy and she could tell he was in pain. She smiled despite herself. "You know only you could say that right now." Should she tell him? "But that's what makes me so special." He said trying to sit up and he managed it. Barley. She should tell him right? "York I..." She cut herself off. What if he didn't? Then she would lose the one true friend she had. His good eye stared at her. No she wouldn't risk it. "I'm really glad your okay." She forced a smile. If she really did feel that way, there would be time anyway.
When you can't hold it in any longer: She curled in a ball. The two AIs raged in her mind. They wouldn't shut up. They told her her every fault, failure and short coming. Every memory, every feeling she had ever felt they went over with a fine toothed comb. Then they got to him. They laughed at her. "You know he hated you?" One of them said. She stiffened. "No he didn't" She shot back. "He cared nothing about you and only talked with you to get a good laugh." The second said. "No" She whispered. That's not possible. Their conversations, were they... "Yes. They were. A lie." One said, laughing at her pain. "No" She whispered again. She didn't believe them. She knew how she felt about him about him. There was no denying it. And she knew he felt the same way. "No!" She screamed. "I love him!" It felt a relief to say it at last. "I love him! I've alway loved him! I will always love him!" The AIs retreated at her victory. She lay there, breathing heavily. "I love you." She told him. She didn't know that she had waited too long to say those words. York was dead. She would never get the chance to tell them to him.
