Description
Back in high school, when I was taking a college-level art class, we would do this little activity where we got in a circle and discussed our latest pieces. One of the pieces done by another gal in the class was amazing, and in a way that completely blew my mind. It was all reds, oranges, yellows, greens, browns, and blacks, put together in a way that made me think of something awe-inspiring. Admittedly the colors in question and their vibrancy came off a little grotesque, but that probably only further added to my perception of the piece. She told us after that it was inspired by Frankenstein's Monster, but before that I gave everyone my interpretation:The sun was just peering over a hilltop, casting dark shadows... onto an old battlefield. The landscape had long-since recovered from the ravages of the war in question, but in this early morning light you can almost see what had once been there... An awful mix of blood and earth, bodies and bones strewn across the ruined land. But at the same time, you could see the growing and green sprouting and spilling over it all. In short, the sunrise offers a glimpse of the past and its memory, and the life and hope of the present.
I've always wanted to try to recreate what I saw in that piece, but I don't think I'll ever be able to. However, I decided to use this tutorial as an opportunity to experiment with roughly the same color palette that the other artist used. I'll admit that my quaint little box of crayons doesn't hold a candle to her painted masterpiece, but I think I did well enough, all things considered.
