Star-crossed“Catch me if thou can’st!”
“Thou wilt’st be catchest”
Two teens laughed as they sprinted through the lush green fields of tall grass. A young girl dodged back and forth through the tall plants while a boy her age tumbled after her. Katherine turned by to her dear friend Petruchio and gleefully called, “Comest sluggish worm!” Petruchio mustered one last enthusiastic burst of energy as he leaped to tag Katherine. That leap soon paid off as not only did he tag Kate, he crashed into her as well. In a heap both teens somersaulted down the hill and landed in the soft bed of grass at the bottom, limbs tangled and laughing at their foolishness. “Just like those summer days spent in our youth.” exclaimed Katherine. Petruchio nodded in agreement. As the warm, pink sun began to set, the eyes of the young lovers aligned, and they shared a blissful kiss, lips tenderly touching as they held each other in their arms. Shortly after, a servant’s voice called from over the hill, shattering their dreamlike moment. “Katherine! Petruchio!” The two kids gathered themselves up and once again raced back to the mansion, where their mothers waited. Once at the mansion, Katherine and Petruchio settled themselves down at the dinner table and still excited from their outdoor experience, they chatted among themselves, oblivious to the conversation between their parents. Katherine and Petruchio’s fathers have been close friends since they were children and spent weekly dinners together during which the two men would catch up on their lives over the past week while the mothers chattered about the latest gossip of other families. Sipping on their goblets of wine, the two gentlemen glanced over toward their children. Karl, father of Katherine chuckled to himself, “Ay me, does thy son tease my daughter with sweet words of young love”. Perelli, Petrucio’s father laughed back and said, “But it is only thy daughter’s fair smile that maketh him act so drunk upon love.” “They wilt make a merry couple when they come of age,” sighed Karl. “Ay, hadst it been 14 years since our wives’ bore our children in their wombs?” questioned Perelli. Karl nodded and responded, “O, how time rush’th by our heads so swiftly as the summer wind cometh and goeth”. Both men stared knowingly at their children, content that they were able to find such suitable marriage partners for their children. Though not paying much attention to the conversations among the adults, the two children were not oblivious to the situations they were placed in upon birth. While Petruchio bragged of his grand escapades with his father on a trip to England, Katherine just chuckled to herself, well knowing that Petruchio had never left his home in Verona, let alone visit England. Petruchio continued to ramble on about his non-existant journey, when Katherine suddenly interrupted him. “Dear Petruchio?” she asked. “What words sweet Katherine art upon thy lips?” replied Petruchio.
“We hast been arranged to be married since birth?”
“Yes”.
”And of close companionship we hast been since our hearts couldst beat?”
“Yes”.
“So…”
“Speak, dear Katherine! What bothers thee?”
“Dost thou truely lovest me?”
Petruchio laughed as Katherine eyed him with puzzlement. After controlling is laughter, he said “Katherine, Katherine, fair Katherine, we hast been in each other arms for thirteen years. For thirteen years we shared gour love and friendship. No other wouldst I be happier to make my wife, than thou, my starry-eyed Kate.” Katherine smiled back in relief and for a beautiful moment, the two looked lovingly into each other’s eyes, their hearts beating as one, feeling as if their mutual and close relationship would never break, ever.
Five years passed and Katherine and Petruchio had held their wedding ceremony on their seventeenth birthdays, with Katherine now 2 months pregnant. Katherine’s womb began expanding in size rapidly over the course of time, and Petruchio was never endingly joking over her swelling abdomen. “Art thou sure that thou artn’t feeding this child more that it can handle? Thy womb hadst grown so quickly as the current rush through a river” he teased her day, playfully rubbing her round tummy. Katherine smiled and gently kissed her husband’s cheek. That night, Petruchio celebrated his future fatherhood at a nearby pub, drinking one goblet of wine too much. Late at night, worried of her husband’s whereabouts, Katherine asked her servant to go search for him. The clock struck midnight when the servant finally trudged home with tragic news. “Speak, Sam. Where has my Petruchio been?” demanded Katherine
“Dear Lady, I wish not to tell thee , but I found Petruchio, and found him gaily chuckling and kissing… another maiden. Even bragged that he hast… taken her maidenhead.” As Sam finished announcing the shocking news, Katherine froze, her eyes clouded, unable to comprehend what she had heard. Realizing what trauma she was in, Sam slowly backed out of the room and closed the door. Katherine collapsed onto her bed, and the angry tears came streaming from her eyes. Her only thoughts were how her life long lover had betrayed her, cheated her, and poured the ice cold truth upon her head. She knew that she had to end the suffering, and not allow her child to feel her pain as well. She walked up to the armor statue in her bedroom, and drew its sword from its sheath. “Come child,” she whispered to her womb, “Come with thy mother and finally rest in heaven.” With one final cry, she thrusted the sword through her womb. Sobbing in agony she finally collapsed onto her bed. The red blood flowed from her wound and stained the snow white sheets of their wedding bed. Minutes too late, the fathers and Sam rushed into the room at the sound of Katherine’s scream of anguish. Karl stared in horror at the gruesome site of his beloved daughter’s bleeding body lying limp over the edge of the bed. In a mad rage he demanded to know how this grotesque incident came to pass. As Sam explained his story, Karl’s anger grew even more hysterical. In an insane act of instinct, he pulled the bloodstained sword from the body and attempted to land a blow on Perelli. Luckily, Sam managed to suppress his master, allowing Perelli to escape with his life while Karl screamed insults of hatred, unable to forgive his best friend and Petruchio for the death of his daughter and grandchild. The next morning Petruchio returned home, sober from his night out, and fully aware of his unspeakable actions. When the news of his wife’s death reached his ears, his heartache and guilt could not be contained. In his sorrow, Petruchio jumped into a river, sinking to the pit bottom of eternal darkness. Perelli’s heart blackened and his hatred for Karl began to grow at the loss of his youngest son, who died because of the sadness and emotional torture caused by his former companion’s daughter. Anger and rage bubbled and boiled in the blood of these two families for generations to come, all a result of the tragic romance and unfortunate events of the lovers at birth. The strongest of bonds between two families were severed, and evolved into a great feud from a blood-stained history. The full names of the star-crossed lovers who started it all--- Katherine Capulet and Petruchio Montague.
