The red color is a genetic mutation caused by a recessive gene similar to that which affects albino animals . It is very rare to see an adult grasshopper with this mutation , because it is much harder for them to hide from predators . Normally this grasshopper would be mostly green and beige . This one was about 4 cm. long body and head + antennae , and a member of the chorthippus family .
