I'm pretty sure the sprite was actually Toad's thumbs. If you think about it, the hands could be tilted, so thus, Toad isn't giving anyone the finger.

By the 7th, he didn't even pause to speak after opening the bag, just smoothly lifted Toad up, walked to the left over the pit of lava, and just threw him in.
