Description Two 21st Century mounted Cossack paramilitaries. Guarding the borders of Russia and the interests of the wider Eastern Slav peoples'.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cossack identity has made something of a resurgence and politicians and the State have attempted to take advantage of this. During the 1990s some regional authorities handed limited policing and administrative duties over to local Cossack Hosts. Since 2005 the Russian State has recognised the Cossacks as a distinct 'ethno-cutural entity', with a military role, and the Russian military have revived Cossack regiments (at least in name) Cossacks have also taken part in a number of the conflicts that have arisen in the former Soviet Union, fighting for the interests of their Eastern Slav cousins.

Both Cossacks in the drawing above are armed with AK-74 rifles and are dressed in FLORA pattern camouflage uniforms. The man on the left can be seen carrying a 'Nagyka', whip used to urge his horse on (Cossacks don't wear spurs) The man on the right can be seen carrying a traditional Cossack 'Shashka', sabre.

I've based the drawing on the best information that I could gather from various online and printed sources.

Actually Russia - the FSB Federal Border Guard Service in particular - does have horse mounted units who primarily recruit from Cossacks. I believe they are primarily used to patrol the borders with China, Kazakhstan Mongolia, etc

Now I will explain who are so called cossacks today in reality:
Gangs of self-proclaimed (for the sake of privileges) "cossacks" consists of clowns who wear costumes with false insignia and false medals, always liars, usually lazy, commonly stupid, sometimes drunkards, other time low criminals. Each gang has "ataman" (gang leader, who apparently elected from the most unfair among others) and spread around false legends about superiority and awesomeness, claim to protect something, while in fact they simply demand money (from the government or from people around directly).
So called "Cossack regiments" in the army consists of typical conscripts (non cossack in origin) and have nothing in common with such gangs (name of unit nothing more than fiction).
"Cossacks" actually wasn't eager to fight on Caucasus (and even when they tried that was epic fail) because of the reasons mentioned above.
Today nearly every town including mine (near Moscow and never was cossack land) have "cossacks" (people call them "ryajenie" which means "cosplayers"), in my town they pretend to be a private security (guarding a store nearby).
Cossacks don't ride horses and not armed with assault rifles. Though they like to pose with toy shashkas.
