Additional story:

There were good and bad sides to taking an early morning fishing trip. The good side was that one could be home in good time with the catch of the day. The bad side was that the cold seemed quite stuck in one’s bones. Fishing was not an active sport, that was for sure, and even with the blanket under her the whole time, Skara could feel the cold clinging to her body. The Tokota were already dry, but they too had opted to go and lay on some blankets for a while after taking dives into the icy waters.

The day was still young, and after a while she felt like the best way to get rid of the stubborn cold was to head back out, and do something a bit more action oriented. A good hunt would surely warm her up, and the Tokotas too.

She headed back out to where the fishing group was resting, and was met with some rather stubborn, whiny huffs from Magnus, who apparently was perfectly comfortable on his blankets, and didn’t want to go anywhere today.

“Don’t be a baby”, she said, grinning a bit as the dire whined even louder, sounding almost exactly like an upset puppy: “You’ll like it. I promise we’ll hunt something bigger than bunnies this time around.”

Soon Magnus was saddled up again, and Emeriel and Alaric weren’t too hard to coerce up from their resting spots either. As a hunting party, after the initial difficulties, this team seemed to work fairly well. Alaric always kept an eye out for his sister, and was able to at least somewhat control her, while Magnus was a good, fairly smooth ride. She liked being able to focus on the task at hand, instead of worrying that her mount could take off into a random direction at any second. More easily spooked Tokotas didn’t make great hunt leaders anyway, for obvious reasons.

This time the footpaths took them deeper into the forest, where she hoped they would come across something to hunt. A fox, maybe, or perhaps some deer. Fox pelts were quite valuable, but deer were a priority for her, if for no other reason, then for the meat they could provide the camp.

“Okay guys, noses down. Find me some deer”, she told the company with a grin, and soon enough they were following something that she hoped was a trail. Her nose couldn’t tell her what it was, but she trusted that this time, it would be something more interesting than a common rabbit.

Magnus stopped in his tracks, standing still with his tail raised, and nose pointing directly forward. The other two stopped as well, taking similar poses, waiting for further instructions, or maybe more accurately, waiting for a permission to hunt. Skara leaned forward, and could pick up the forms of a herd of deer between the trees. They hadn’t noticed the hunters, as the lot of them were downwind, and the trees blocked them from view.

“Well done”, she said in a hushed voice, and steered Magnus slightly to the side, so they would have a better surround of the prey when assaulting the herd. Deer were nimble animals, and it wouldn’t take much to lose sight of them in the woods - something she couldn’t afford happening right now.

“Steady”, Skara said, mostly to Emeriel, who was already seeming a little too excited. Slowly they made their way closer to the herd, all but the excited female being very careful, and looking for any signs of alarm from the deer.

When she felt the time was right, Skara put some pressure on Magnus’ sides with her legs. Without any further commands, the dire lept forward, with the two others quickly following suit. The deer sure noticed them now, making nervous and scared sounds as they too leapt into action. The thicket was not perfect for Magnus, who soon let Alaric take the lead, following the smaller and nimbler male dutifully as the piebald guided them through the trees. The thrill of the hunt took over both the Tokotas and their handler - the white of the deer’s tail was like a flag calling them onward, even when bushes or young trees got in their way. Every now and then Skara felt the sting of a branch slapping against her face, but she ignored it, keeping her eyes on the prize. This time they would surely be successful. The deer were close, the hunters swift and sure.

Alaric almost had one in his jaws already, and one good bite would be all it took, with Emeriel so close behind to aid her brother. As they came into a small clearing on the wood, the first deer fell - Alaric got a hold of it’s tail, and yanked it backwards, taking the animal off of it’s feet. Alaric didn’t stop, but Emeriel took the opportunity, and finished the prey, as Magnus and Skara passed it by in an attempt to stay behind Alaric, and catch more than one deer for today’s hunt.
