Aspen trees have links with the other side! Crowns of their leaves have been found in ancient burials, and are said to give safe passage between the worlds of the living and the dead. The Greek name Aspis means shield which is a historical use of its wood. The leaves of the aspen tree trembling (hence the inclusion of tremulous in the scientific name)in the breeze was said, in Celtic lore, to be the tree communicating with the next world.

Aspen, the character, my sweet little psychonaut didn’t know he’d be a shield for ancient creatures, or that he’d shepherd souls. Or that he’d travel across several realities and one day, ego death would take on new meaning and he would be reborn as something new. When I named the character I had no idea what special meanings were attached to the tree so what a happy accident!
