That's kind of the symbolism behind his cutie mark. Originally, it would have been that little medical symbol, then it became a sword that looked like a medical symbol.

That had to be a bit uplifting. I imagine Rory would have liked the confirmation of, "Oh, I'm not really meant to be a Nurse. I'm meant to kick all kinds of butt!"

Yup. Usually I go by what mark the character would have gotten when they came of age, before they met the Doctor. But since Rory's pretty much straddling two alternate timelines, I figured he could be the exception to that rule.
