    “Hey kid, how’s it hangin?”

Cosmo wasn’t a kid anymore, but they still trembled like one. Their legs couldn’t seem to hold them up and they fell to the floor in the face of the unfaceable.

    “Down on your luck?”

The voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere, but they knew the source. It was the towering mass of tentacles and flesh before them. They had seen flashes of it at the edges of their dreams, and the smallest glimpse of its power had sent them into the hospital. The memories came back in a flood, threatening to pull Cosmo under. Their brain stayed firmly planted in the present, with the large cat and their inky swollen limbs lounging in an abandoned warehouse.

“Let’s make a deal.” their booming voice said, “what is it you want?”

They tried to keep their voice even as they replied, “Uh. Magic?”

The words came with difficulty. Every syllable passed their tongue was like pulling teeth, mixed with the same unsettled aimlessness of a young adult on their own for the first time.

A terrible rumble builds in the pit of its stomach, growing to shake the ground. Bits of dirt fall into the crater as the laugh emerges from Lasagna Cat’s mouth.

“We’ll get there! You will have your magic! But I can do so much more for you than a few party tricks!”

He reaches over with a massive paw, blocking the wind blowing in through the ruined wall. It dragged against the dirty floor, kicking up long-settled dust as it bore down on Cosmo.

They scrambled backwards, legs getting tangled up on their wide tail. They hit the ground with a thump, the crash reverberating from their humerus to their skull.

Dirt and cobwebs encroached as the giant paw dragged against the ground. Its onslaught sent Cosmo scrambling back on all fours. Their paw hit empty air, but it was too late to stop the momentum. They tumbled backwards off the ledge into the sinkhole. Lasagna Cat’s laugh echoed off the walls in a terrible cacophony.

Air rushed through Cosmo’s hair, whipping it out of its careful bun. They hit the ground with a crack, reverberating through their spine. It hurt, but somehow didn’t stop them. The sharp glint of fangs loomed overhead, blocking out the little light that had been shining into the warehouse before.

They pushed themself up off the rough terrain. As they did, it started to shake, knocking them back down to their back.

The ground slowly began to lift, the same large paw as before appearing in their line of sight, threatening to close in on them.

Dread sunk deep into Cosmo’s bones, slipping in through the cracks from falling. They weren’t on the ground, they were trapped in the massive set of paws, slowly forming a cage. Ink fell from LC’s claws in globs, forming stringy bars all around them.

The paws stopped moving in front of the terrifying maw, twisted into a wide grin carving into their ears. It mirrored the development in Cosmo’s own face in a way that made their stomach turn. Through it all, they carried the scars of their childhood, scars that reflected this horror onto their own face. They were nothing more than a mirror, a lightbox letting the shadows of something far greater than them through.

The laugh faded into a soft purr as the Lasagna Cat spoke again. “Tell me, kid, what is it you really want?”

This time, the words fell from their lips much easier. It was the truth, something they had tried to hide, but their insides were all lit up and they couldn’t hide anymore.

“I want to be loved,” they said, crumbling into themself, “I want to be loved, I want to be loved.”

    “That can be arranged.”

    They woke up screaming.

Bolting upright gave them a headache, vision blurring at the sudden motion. They rubbed at their eyes to force the sleep away, force their nightmare away. It was the king of thing they typically wrote off as a weird dream, but something about it felt real.

Cosmo let their arms drop, and sucked in a breath.

Their shirt was different. They had fallen asleep in their clothes from the day, past exhausted from the day. It used to be a sweater vest and a button-up, but now they were wearing a cream shirt. It was bright orange around the collar and sleeves with a orange cat placed in the middle. It made Cosmo’s blood run cold.

With a sigh, they got out of bed and walked to their closet. Their old clothes were hanging up, wrinkled but otherwise intact. They changed out of the weird new addition to their wardrobe and into real clothes. They were already awake, no point in going back to sleep. No point in dwelling on weird dreams.

Even as they went about their day, Lasagna Cat’s voice echoed in their head, the same phrase over and over.

LC and Friends, now featuring Cosmo, the Illuminator of Lasagna Cat.
