Critter was the mascot for the ill-fated discount airline Valujet. Operations began in 1993 and there was almost always negative publicity surrounding their practices. It all culminated to tragedy on May 11, 1996 when a DC-9 carrying 110 passengers and crew left Miami, Florida bound for Atlanta, Georgia when it crashed onto the Everglades only 10 minutes after takeoff, killing everyone on board. The cause was determined to be improperly stored chemical oxygen generators without caps, which ignited in the cargo hold.
