Description
Is it just me, or is there little to no fanart to what Professor Ratigan's mother looks like? I mean, I found like only two really good pictures of such, and both versions seem to have Ratigan's looks mostly come from his father, with mostly just hair or eyes from the mother. And now I'm afraid I made her look too much like him.
I do like the idea though that Ratigan (or Ratigan bros. in this case. hehe...) are rat subspecies hybrids.
Since I wanted to be as accurate as possible with any of this, so my research goals were the following:
1) What type of rats were most common in both Ireland (since Everyone as concluded that Padraic Ratigan is either from Ireland or of Irish heritage) and England, preferably London, during the Victorian Era.
2) Have any of the listed subspecies to be found ever tried to breed together?
3) Has any offspring been produced if mating has occurred?
4) Since Sebastian is an albino rat, do both subspecies have albinos possibility among them?
Naturally, if you've seen my status on hybrids in the GMD fandom in general, you'll know that's were questions 2 and 3 come from. And the answers I learned? The answers actually surprised me.
1)The brown rat, also known as Norway rats, which is a known species in Ireland during this time and long enough to have defiantly bred in Ireland for many generations, actually came to England during the 18th century, and started to overtake where black rats, also known as roof rats, were living! So, not only do we have two subspecies of rats in not only England, but also majorly London, but we also have an excuse of Irish heritage here. Yes, it's before the Victorian era, but there's an excuse for Professor Ratigan to have any Irish heritage in him and have him in England.
2) Brown and black rats defiantly follow what is the primary mating rule where any cross-species mating either isn't happening or very rarely happens. Luckily for us, there have been some rare occasions of where brown and black rats have mated, though again it's rare.
3) It's happened. Yes, brown/black rat hybrids have happened. However, there is some bad news. One, most records of this have been anecdotal ones from owners. Don't know what anecdotal means? Don't worry, I didn't at first and I looked it up. It means not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research. But, from the ones I have found and looking them over and over again, I think there's been enough ones where it seems to have very likely happened. However, on further bad news, the offspring always have died either a day or a few days after being born. Sometimes it's the mother biting them or them just dieing on their own, but in the end dead.
But since this is Disney, I think we can be allowed to let the last part past.
4) This is the part where I'm laughing. Norway rats are way may likely to be albino than roof rats, but there are some rare occasions for a roof rats to be albino. So this is possible. I'm dropping the mic, I have had the best day of research ever!
However there is one problem I now have. I can't find the website anymore, but I defiantly remember it saying somewhere that Ratigan was a black rat.....
Why is that a problem? Well, because of this: www.domyownpestcontrol.com/ima…
Now given of what we know of Professor Ratigan, if he's not a rat hybrid, does it actually look like that he would be a black rat?
Remember, Roof Rat = black rat, Norway Rat = Brown rat.
Yeah, if anything it kind of looks more like he'd be a brown rat if it wasn't for the tail and ears, but than, that might just be me... actually, if anything, that just helps point it in a direction that he's probably a hybrid....
By the way, does anyone find it funny that it's the brown rat that called the sewer rat and not the black rat? ok, yeah, Disney might not have known that info, but now whenever I watch the movie I can't help but just giggle a bit. It'd be so cool if Disney did do research on that and just threw it in there, that would be somewhat neat.
Wow, I really went on a rant here, didn't I?
Anyways, I figured that since I have Sebastian adopting Padraic and Jim, and he's 5 years older than Padraic, who's 7 years older than Jim.... making Sebastian 12 years apart.... and though adulthood, and age to be able to adopt a child, for the time was 21, but the enlistment age was usually 13-15... by the way, also better neat research, so when doing the math, and adding the fact that Sebastian would want to pay for his brothers' education as long as possible while stilling having them cared for, and so that adds costs and how much Sebastian would try to save up, yet the time the orphanage would kick an orphan out of the system was 17..... I'd have Sebastian finally being able to get Padraic and Jim out of the orphanage when he was roughly at the end of 21 after joining the military at age 14 or 15 I think? The pay was really hard to look up, so I'm slightly half-guessing on that part when thinking that Sebastian would want a better start as soon as he could for what remained of his family.
So by that math, Sebastian was about to turn 22, but still 21, so that makes Padraic 16 and Jim 9. Which, adding the fact that their mother past on when Jim was 2, making Padraic 9..... but then Sebastian would be 14.... so.... In conclusion:
Jim and Padraic were in the orphanage for 7 years while Sebastian was in the orphanage for at the least 5 months to at the most 11 months. ..... Yeah, I think this might explain why I have Padraic and Jim not having the ... closest of a relationship with Sebastian.
In fact, I like to think that due to all these events, Sebastian would hold some envy against Padraic in a way since he got to spend more time with Jim even after Sebastian adopted them and guilt for not being there most of the time.
Since 10 was around the time when Victorian kids (aka, most boys) went to public or private school, I would think that despite this, with the idea that Sebastian is most likely away most of the time anyway, Padraic would have to drag Jim to class with him even when Jim was nine. And since Jim does become a painter in his future anyway, I'd like to think that as a kid, he was a creative little squirt. And I know enough kids, including myself, who like to draw stuff now that have painted or scribbled on the walls as little kids.
Hey, maybe this also explains why Padraic isn't the most... enthusiastic around kids. He already had to deal with technically raising one. -^-
And since it'll probably come up, the reason why I didn't put Padraic's gray fur here is because I think that's something he happens to get when older. And that trait is actually common in many animals, though mostly noticeable in rodents. However, I could also put it as something in his father's genetics, since I have Sebastian and Padraic having that trait, but not Jim.
Now as for information on the former the Ratigan mummy. (man, I love British phrasing.....)
name: Julia Moran Ratigan (none of the neighbors know if that's her maiden name of married name)
Birthday: January 24, 1824
Day of death: June 16,1851. Exact day is unknown. (27 when she died...)
Reason of death: Childbirth. Daughter's fate is unknown (comment votes).
Ethic: Irish immigrant
Species: Brown rat with slightly larger ears.
Hair: Black
Eyes: light golden
fur: diluted pale brown.
Unique markings: Freckles and markings around eyes.
Social class: Lower middle class.
Married?: In question actually.... Most neighbors have never seen a ring on her, or even a known husband around her house despite having three sons. The only hints anyone has ever gotten to such is the pink and violet cravat she wore after her first pregnancy and a well known ex co-worker that stops by every now and then that'll drop off money. It's rumored the co-worker is the father of the boys, but no one completely sure due do the lack of interactions he has with both the kids and Julia.
Personality: Julia was a naturally mysterious person ever since coming to England. She was a loner to begin with and possibly had to adjust to becoming a mother. It's hinted she had a strained relationship with most of her neighbors, co-workers, and even her own sons due to wanting to keep to herself. Aside from that, she occurred to be a determined and independent woman for her time, working multiple jobs despite whatever conditions she was in. She usually left most people alone and never seemed to try and bother anyone unless it was important or someone approached her. It actually made a lot of her neighbors have a very hard time to even gossip about her.
Family: Aside from her three sons, the rest of Julia Ratigan's family is mostly left in mystery as well. Again, she has no officially known husband, and all other family are most possibly in Ireland. It's been hinted in the past that she might have a sister in England, but again, no one is certain.
Jobs: Julia had multiple jobs, something that was probably one for the few certainly known things about her. She and her older two sons actually did the neighborhood's laundry pretty cheaply (though some items have been known to go missing if it was washed by her and her second-eldest), and seemed to have worked in a shoe factory before becoming a mother. Ever since her factory job went done, she seemed to have done various of jobs for seemingly richer citizens of Mousedom. Often on these jobs, she would be missing a few days before coming back with a rather well payment. Sometimes, for reasons better not said, she leaves for the jobs with a weapon or two, most times with a ragged coat and dark gloves. It's another reason why some neighbors would rather not make rumors about her.
Relationships:
Sons: Since she died with her youngest of two, Julia left her impression with her older two sons. Sebastian is reluctant to talk about her, sometimes even blanching at the subject, while Padraic will seem to smirk but still stay quiet. Seemingly, to neighbors at least, once in a while,
either Sebastain or Padraic had been exposed to what other jobs their mother did. Apparently, only Padraic kept trying to join in on the job.
Ex Co-worker?: Everyone knows he's from the shoe-factory Julia used to work at, and that he's a roof rat. However, not much else is surprisingly known about him or any other relation to Julia, other than the fact he's also a chimney sweeper. No one even knows his first or last name. Some think he's her lover, but there's no clear proof. He seems to be just as mysterious as Julia. His interactions with Julia's kids also seem to not confirm him the the father, since the only one he treats with any acknowledgement is Sebastian.
Daughter?: Julia died giving birth to a daughter, who's fate is oddly enough not known. The midwife won't say anything aside from something about the gender, but whether the girl lived of died at birth is unknown.
Note: I kind of out of nowhere wanted to give the Ratigan Brothers a little sister, but I didn't know if that was overboard. So I'm leaving up to the comments on if I should or not. Until then, what I have up is it.
Sebastian, Jim, and Julia (and possible sister?) belong to me/
Professor Ratigan and GMD belongs to Disney
