Description I've been living in San Francisco for almost 6 years now. There are so many great things about the city and the Bay Area. And thinking about it, what subject could I have possibly painted about other than this awesome landmark... and I'm obviously not talking about the giant octopus.

I have uploaded a couples sketches I did while brainstorming this painting: [link]

haha. Awesome! I like the torrent of drool comeing out of its mouth.

How did you do the background? Did you paint over a photograph, or did you draw that out first?

lkermel In reply to WonderDookie [2009-10-04 07:58:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your great feedback, I really appreciate it
About the background, I've used some my photos as reference. I like to do that as it teaches me a lot about lighting and color. Before doing a painting, I often get my camera and take tons of photos - and I live in San Francisco so it was easy for me to study the Golden Gate
By the way, I really like your drawing style ! Great work !!!

the shadow the reflection and the iridescent head are all amazing. though it cant be an octopi for hes lacking some arms. And those cat like eyes are fairly uncharactoristic for sea creatures. But hey it6s waaaay better than I could have done.
Cheers

I started by studying octopus/squid pictures but I wanted to come up with something different. This is why it has this kind of eyes and lacking some arms... about arms, I was also a bit lazy there and didn't paint more than six arms

Yummy!

It's wonderful!! I really like the 'Einsteiny' look I find in this squid... big brains and pulpous body...

Oly the sea is a little too neat, but otherwise it's a great piece!!

Ha ha ha ! "big brains and pulpous body", this is the best way to describe it !!! Did Einstein really have a pulpous body ?... interesting
The sea would indeed need more love, but I couldn't be asked... too much work
Thanks again for your awesome feedback !!!!

The idea to draw a gigantic squid which destroys human constructions isn’t new but your work is the first where I thought the squid is kinda cute. It doesn’t look like a typical bloodthirsty monster from a horror movie but like a big pet that by chance likes to eat the Golden Gate Brigde.

I like its facial expression, Looks like it’s really enjoying its meal. And the salvia running down the bridge is a nice detail. It looks as if its sucking on it like on a lollipop. The head is also drawn with great details and really realistic. I could point out all the other parts in your picture with much details, like the bridge, the water or the background. I say it just in short: you’re really great in drawing realistic and you have a good sense for colour matching and shades. The composition is also good.

The only things I don’t like or better, where I’m unsure about are the arms. They could have more structure. And I think the perspective isn’t always right. E.g. the arm in the background is as big as those in the foreground, that’s kinda wrong. It must be smaller and a bit more thin.

Overall you did a really great job. Keep it up!

Waooo, thanks for your great comment. I think I've never receive such a constructive feedback, and I really appreciate it. Your note about the perspective is totally spot on - it was a gamble for me to get some symmetry going in the composition. But you're totally right, that tentacle at the back should be a lot smaller. I see... I couldn't fool you on this one
Thank you so much for your feedback, this is awesome

Did you know that all Octopuses go through dementia after mating? They usually die from infection because they just wander into rocks.

Again, impressive props to you on the digital and airbrushing job. The color scheme works wonderfully.
