...doesn't work because players are non-solid**No longer the case from Minecraft 1.9 onwards (finally, it's been 3 years! )
This animation is only relevant for Minecraft versions 1.3 through 1.8
Animation is a bit sluggish, my fault, also it's a large gif file, it might take a while to load.
Edit: gfycat of the gif , if you don't want to wait for the gif to load!

Prior to Minecraft 1.3, pushing players by walking into them was possible

Well, like I said, pushing by Punching is how to do it, 'cause it' virtually fool proof
Unless PvP is turned off

If PvP is off, you can use a water bucket to push the player off with the current

trouble is, water is very good at stopping a lot of the things you would be trying to push them into, fall damage included..
