Description Construct I. 2005.
100 Hand-cut Museum Board pieces, Glue.
4 x 6 x 9 in.

The spatial transformation project was the first work we were given at The University of Michigan's School of Architecture and Urban Planning. The idea was to introduce us to the ideas of making and conceptual ideation through physical modeling.

The assignment was to assemble 100 layers of museum board cut to 4 x 9 inches to create a block 6 inches deep. We were told to cut away at each piece of museum board in order to create voids which engaged space in an "architectural way."

This one week assignment became the jumping-off point for a second phase of the project which we only later found out about.

Love the idea, it's original.. but be carefull with the presentation, some pieces are bad cuted and dirty. I think that the result could be better.

Reminds me of something similar that someone did by cutting out pages from encyclopedias and then stacking them up. Very good work! How'd you know what to cut?

Impressive. The shapes created have a pleasingly natural feel to them. It must have taken a lot of work to put this together.

Excellent piece, I love the negative space you were able to create! I especially like the swirl on the visual right.

Is that 4 ply museum board or is it thicker? Either way, cutting that is a hand and elbow killer.

great work and well thought out and designed

have you seen the designs of a Dutch company called demakersvan ? this really reminded me of their work.....they made a table in the same manner as this with 57 layers of plywood glued together and then a computer /machine carved into it, looked amazing.

This is really cool Congrats on the DD! It reminds me of a similar project we had in my undergrad studio for architecture at Texas A&M. This is really nice, I like the way you lit it also. The light permeates the space very nicely. It reminds me of a columned cave, if it's to be taken literally.

museum board? that's expensive! well kinda. and you used so much... we did something like this at my arch school as well. yours is pretty cool - reminds me of a cave; yeah, that's not a bad thing

LocusMote In reply to lilhoosier32 [2008-07-27 19:05:45 +0000 UTC]

it isn't cheap, that's for sure. but it won't yellow with age, so that's a plus. Also, it's a uniform white instead of having a yellow-brown core.
