Description
The Commander is a distant relative of the temperate region's Red and Blue Admirals. This Nymphalinae is a dark reddish brown on the upperside, with a broad white macular band extending across both the fore and hindwings. The underside is generally marked as above but the basal halves of the wings are a pale greenish grey. The butterfly is relatively common at the edges of the nature reserves in Singapore, and is seasonally abundant. It has a strong gliding flight, reminiscent of the Athyma species of butterflies. One of its favourite nectar sources is the ripened inflorescence of the Singapore Rhododendron (Melastoma malabathricum). The species can also be found feeding at roadside seepages and muddy footpaths.
