Description
After Savannah dropped Lexi off at the Hampton she drove. Like her father, Savannah loved cars, and something about the steady thrum of the Silverado's V8 engine soothed her. She didn't have a specific destination in mind, but she didn't want to go home to an empty bed, instead she would mull things over while driving. At McDonald's thing were going tremendously with Lexi, and then the bottom suddenly fell out. Savannah was left running in the air, cartoon style, before plummeting over the cliff. As mad as Savannah was, Lexi was right. Savannah had to make a choice, and the choice was irrevocable. Was Savannah prepared to come out as a lesbian? She wasn't even sure if she was one. All she knew is that she loved Lexi, but once she was branded as a lesbian the label stuck, along with the avalanche of shit that came with it.
Savannah drove on the triple span bridge across the Colorado River leading into Austin. The Austin city lights were beautiful at night, but she had no one to enjoy them with. Savannah's cell phone rang, disturbing the serenity of her nighttime drive, and she saw that it was Charlotte. Not only had Savannah fucked things up with Lexi, she had also ditched her best friend the night before her wedding. Savannah answered her phone, mentally preparing herself for the barrage.
“How did things go tonight Chesty?”
“Ummmm... It could have went better,” Savannah replied, fighting the sudden urge to cry. “I'm sorry to ditch you like that.”
“Hey I understand. KC is mega pissed though. She had some idea that she was going to hook up with Lexi tonight.”
“She's not Lexi's type.”
“Yeah, and she thought Lexi was going to jump in the sack with her like a two dollar whore. KC is used to getting whatever she wants. She's a spoiled little brat.”
“Sorry about all the drama.”
“Hey it's not your fault. It makes things more interesting when the bridal party hates each other. It will be like an episode of desperate housewives.”
“I'm here for you Charlotte. The situation with Lexi is complicated, but remember I'm here for you.”
“You've always been there for me,” Charlotte replied. “In high school I was known as the fat girl. It was my whole identity. I was good at softball but I was an unpopular nobody. No one would go out with me. But after I met you and Lexi in college for the first time I was friends with the popular crowd. You gave me confidence that I could be both big and beautiful.”
“Charlotte that's so sweet. I am choking up!”
“I mean it with all my heart,” Charlotte purred. She paused before continuing. “I'm a little worried about tomorrow. We are going to the salon to get our nails and hair done, but I don't know what Lexi will do about her wig.”
“Lexi will just lie about it as usual. Does KC know?”
“Hell no! KC has such a big mouth there is no way I am telling her that Lexi is bald. Then KC will make some snide comment about the wig to Lexi, and Lexi will lose her shit. Things are dramatic enough already without adding Lexi's wig into the equation.”
“Yes Lexi has a temper. She's a little fight cat.”
“Yeah and KC does some martial arts. She has a yellow belt and she thinks she's Bruce fucking Lee. I'd hate to see Lexi get her rug knocked off again. KC can be a real bitch.”
“I didn't knock Lexi's wig off on purpose.”
“I know. Shit happens. It was her own fault for coming at you like that.”
“Sometimes I think I would have been better off letting her kick my ass. I deserved it.”
“Well life is about second chances. Why else would I have put Lexi in the bridal party?”
Suddenly it made sense. Lexi and Charlotte kept in touch after college, but with Lexi away in Atlanta Charlotte had closer friends.
“Savannah, I finally found someone I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want you to find that someone too. I don't know whether or not it is Lexi, but I don't want you to have any regrets.”
It was ironic, as Savannah lived the last seven years full of regret.
“You're right Charlotte. No regrets. I love you.”
“I love you too and I'll see you tomorrow.”
