***Chapter 1: A Private's Diary***
It is March 6, 3104. Our former homeplanet, Earth, has been destroyed by those darn assimilators. No one knew where they came from.
I remember, it was in November 28, 3092 when they appeared. They just emerged out of nowhere, destroying anything and everything in its path. Sadly, my family was also killed during the assault. I, together with other several battalion of troops managed to get aboard the F-370X just before the assimilators launched the plasma bomb on our planet.
I've seen our planet being crushed by that bomb. Giant explosions, Large masses of debris being shot into space. It was a terrible thing to see. Even up to this day, I'm still haunted by the thought of our planet being destroyed.
Now, under the presidential order, we've colonized the planet formerly known as 99942113, and now named as "Siegretron". Just like earth it has good amounts of water, breathable air made possible by our terraformer, and some animals.
The animals here were nothing I've ever seen back on Earth. I've seen swimming dog-like creatures in the air, and a giant Janitor fish walking on land. There are no aliens here. Well, no other intelligent beings here but us humans.
We take up more than 80 kilometres of the land here. The base is surrounded by the army, airforce and spaceforce. We have also set up satellites which can reach up to 1.9 million miles away from this planet so we can detect if any assimilators are nearby. At least then, we can have time to prepare for another attack.
We have also set up several land based defenses such as Gauss Cannons, Ion Cannons, Plasma Cannons, and some Heavy Laser Cannons just in case. There are abundant sources of Uranium here which can provide us energy for at least 6,000 years. The food here is also different. Those scientists are doing a good job at making food from their surroundings. I can admit, none of it tastes good. But it's better than nothing right?
Our life here is quite simple. Gather resources, Make food, Guard the planet, Space patrol shifts, construct infrastructures. Me and my group are assigned at the space patrol.
They've given our group a cruiser ship. We go back down to the planet to re-fuel.
The ship has it's own gravity stabilizer which gives us the ability to stand rather than float. The shield generators are quite strong. It can withstand a shot from our Plasma Cannon, so that should give me a feeling of safety.
Anyways, I've heard of a rumor that the Science Division is currently studying how to harness the power of gravity and use it as a weapon. But can you even control gravity? I'll be stunned if they ever accomplish that.
In the meantime, we humans will do our very best to survive and reproduce. We will never give up hope.
- Private Mick Walder
**Chapter 2: A normal day at the Office**
It was 3:42 AM when I was awoken by a slight bump in the ship.
I immediately got out of my bed then rushed to the deck.
"Any problems captain?", I said
"No, just bumped another space debris. Good thing these shields are thick", Captain Ace said, followed by a chuckle.
Captain Ace was a bulky man, has a large beard. Makes me think of him as a pirate. His cheekbones are completely hidden, and his face resembles that of an old man, but I'll tell ya, He's a strong man. He once took out 2 Battleships on one space battle. His reputation soared him to be the captain of this cruiser.
"About time you woke up sleepy head", Private Tang said.
Tang resembles that of a typical chinese person. Short, thin, and always likes to wear his traditional chinese suit in times of celebration. I guess traditions never die despite of the hardships we've encountered.
"I haven't slept for 2 days", I replied
"Ok, before an argue arises, check the ship status Walder", the captain butted in.
"All right"
I then approached the gauges located just beside the captains seat. I was the technician of the ship. We were just 3 people on the ship. The captain, The shooter, Tang, and me, the technician.
I read the gauges then reported back to the captain.
"Supplies are at an average, probably will last us for 2 more weeks. Fuel is still high, shields full, Ion cannons working properly, Energy Generator ok, Engines ok, radar reports give nothing. Everything is in working condition", I said
"Good, then we're in for another boring day", the captain said.
"Yeah, well, boring is better than anything else", I said jokingly.
So, we just resumed to what we do every day. Play cards, stare at the space, eat, sleep.
It was boring. But it couldn't be any worse than this could it? But this was the day that would change everything.
It was quarter to six, almost the end of my shift. I was about to go to my bunker until I heard the radar beep. The captain was asleep, and Tang was in the restroom, so I checked the radar.
My heart immediately sank, then shouted, "ASSIMILATORS!"
Tang came to the deck.
"That quickly?"
The captain yelled, "Turn on the shields!"
"Shields on", I said
the captain then turned to Tang, "Weapons?" Then Tang nodded.
"Good, let's get us some assimilators!", the captain said.
Just before we fired our ion cannons, a message from the general appeared.
"Return to base, I repeat return to base!", The general said. Then the image was gone.
The captain, without a word whirled the controls then we headed back to base.
About 7 minutes later we were back in Siegretron.
I immediately heard a mixture of the alert siren, and a guy in the microphone saying "Everyone report to HQ. ASAP"
I, Tang, and the captain hurried to the base and we waited the colonel to arrive.
Minutes later he came in the waiting hall.
"We don't know how the assimilators found us that quickly. We don't even know how they bypassed our satellites. But they are here now. Everyone. Go to the ammunitions hall and grab your weapons. Teams 1, 2, and 3 will be assigned for space combat. Teams 4,5,6 will be in the air combat. Teams 7,8,9 and 10 is in charge of ground defense. Team 11 is in charge of medic care and teams 12, 13, 14 is in charge of ground combat. Anyone who is not called, you are in charge of the president's safety. What are you waiting for? For humanity!"
Then everyone shouted, "FOR HUMANITY!"
We all rushed to the ammunitions hall, I got separated from Ace and Tang. I hurried to get the armor and helmet, then combat knife. Then I hurried to get the Plasma rifles and EMP Pistols. I was instructed to team 3, Space Combat.
I was going to the shipyard until I heard thick explosions in the air.
Any minute now the assimilators would deploy their ground units to our base. So, I ignored the explosions and hurried to the ship. On the entrance I was immediately assigned to the turret division. There were thousands of people in the ship. It was a massive ship. But the size of the Assimilator Armada, I thought to myself that this would be no match.
I ran to the nearest turret control. As soon as everyone were in their position the pilot said on the speakers "Ok, 1st turret division, fend off the scouts and fighters. Then 2nd turret division take care of the battleships. Disable the engines as that is their weak point. The technicians turn on all shields and weapons...", then there was a brief silence. Then the pilot said. "Good luck everyone! For humanity".
He was in a low voice. I knew that he already knew that he wasn't going to make it. But we will do our best for humanity. This was the real war of the worlds.
**Chapter 3: War of the Worlds**
The ship then came to life. The roar of the engine can be heard for miles. This was the fight to make the human race live on. I, as a part of the human race will do everything to stop those assimilators.
I can see everyone praying that they live by the end of the day. They knew what to assimilators were capable of. It most certainly seems that they feel no pain. And they don't stop until they succeed.
the ship breached space in minutes. I can see the entire armada of our battleships in space. But when I turned to see the assimilator armada, there would be no way we can beat them.
I saw one ship immediately exploded right in front of my eyes.
"Laser cannons engage targets!", the pilot yelled.
"Cannons online. Alpha team fire on battleships, beta team retaliate the missiles", the head of the turret division said.
Just before the turrets fired, we received a particle cannon shot. The sound was like that of a nuclear bomb. Hopefully our shields absorbed all the impact. But the bad news was, our shields were knocked out. One more shot like that and it's over for all of us.
The turrets began firing, one after another the lasers glowed.
The incoming missiles were retaliated but some of it had struck us and heavily damaged our rear engines.
I again looked at my turret window and saw that most of our ships are being destroyed. The space was covered with our debris.
"Report on the other ship divisions", our captain said.
And then the speaker was filled with chaos.
"182nd Division has heavily damaged weapons systems"
"71st division just got hit by the particle cannon"
"81st, 2nd and 8th fighter divisions are wiped out"
"May day, may day, our battleship is heavily damaged"
"HELP US!"
"94th fighter division is bombarding assimilator fighters"
"May day, may day!"
"4th battle division is falling!"
"Evacuating ship!"
The voices of dying men in the speaker was unbearable to hear. Our entire ship was filled with silence.
The pilot turned off his radio.
The silence was then broken by another particle cannon hit. Our ship was falling.
Everyone hurried to the Evac Drones to head back to Siegretron.
I was running towards the Evac bay, but then I saw our ship crack. Our ship is tearing apart!
I pushed harder to one of the Drones. I eventually got into one of the drones.
The drone immediately thrusted its engines back to surface.
As we were heading to the atmosphere, I saw our ship completely obliterated. Bodies flew everywhere.
Most soldiers in the ship cried. The sight was gruesome. Why should the human race suffer like this?
Minutes later the drone crashed hard to the land, luckily no one was hurt.
We got out of the drone and equipped our weapons. We rushed to the HQ as fast as we could. On the way, I looked up to the sky to see what was going on in space. All I could see was what looked like fireworks. It was our armada. The armada was thinning, I knew without a doubt that any minute now the assimilators would reach the surface.
We have no backup ship to colonize another planet. Even if we did, we need still need to construct another teraformer to make life on that planet bearable. But making a terraformer for human hands is just impossible. If robots could build one in 4 years, how long can humans alone build it? 100 years? 200 years? a thousand years? It's just impossible.
At the HQ we were again to wait at the lobby for further orders.
The General came in, in just seconds.
"All right. I'm very glad you have all made it here alive. I feel sorry for our troops who were killed in duty. But this is not the time to mourn. Right now, it is time for us to defend the land. We have deployed at least 6 Ion cannons and 34 Turrets while the battle on space continues. 40 people in front of me will be assigned to the turrets, the rest will be on land combat. We cannot face them head on, so We will just stay in these walls. Our defenses should hold enough for a couple of days. We need to defend it at all costs since our scientists have reported that they have discovered how to harness the gravitational energy. We will immediately begin to construct the graviton cannon. It should be completed in 2 days. This is our only shot to win this once and for all. So all troops, give it your best! Dismissed"
I was happy to have heard that we can harness the gravity. It was the most relieving thing I've heard all day. But we shouldn't be excited just yet. The real challenge was to defend our HQ until the graviton cannon is finished. By then they can launch the brainstem of the assimilators out of this world.
For humanity...
