***Chapter 7: Assimilators, The plot***About 873 Lightyears away was Jamenkari, the home of the assimilators.
Their planet has no sources of food or any liquid material. It was an urban wasteland. Huge piles of storage depots are used to store their captured resources. They also have a depot where they keep their captured species.
The assimilators, basically were scavengers. They raid planets for liquid and food supplies. These assimilators can consume anything. From dead rats to precious metals. And drink liquids from water to liquid nitrogen. Their appetite for anything is big. They can consume anything.
The assimilators always go on an expedition to gather resources from planet to planet. They first check the planet if any intelligent creature exists, if anyone was intelligent enough to fight back, the assimilators send signal to their planet for back-up. Just like what they did on earth. They sent their armada, killed all creatures, gather resources, and blow the planet up. They never want to be known to any creatures that can remember. Any creature that remembers them must die, because they are too paranoid enough that their prey might attack them in a later time. Although, if they still survive after the raid, then they'll just leave the creatures alone. But the humans, they have a different situation. That's why they chased the humans to Siegretron.
But a lot of their brothers have died, what used to be just an extinction process turned into war. They made it their mission to destroy all humans ever since.
The assimilators are just organisms that use technology to make them stronger. The assimilators are very smart. They can discover all the uses of something in a day.
In the Hive of the assimilators.
The assimilator leader is currently seating on his desk, it is currently facing a screen, contacting someone.
"Captain, report", The assimilator leader commanded.
"We've succesfuly sabotaged some of their bunkers and killed dozens of their men", the captain replied.
"Good. Ceasefire, in the meantime", the leader paused, then continued, "Send the spies, out them inside the HQ, see what they are currently planning"
"Yes my lord"
"I'll send in another battalion to escort you captain. In the meantime, harvest the scrap metal produced by the debris of the battle"
"Yes my lord"
Then the screen was shut down. The leader left its chair then entered a room full of other assimilators which seemed like their generals.
Everyone in the room stood up.
"Great, everyone is here. We can now begin"
Everyone then sat down.
"We have currently developed a new technology that can counter the human turret defense system. It is called glaciermophina. This new technology allows us to be unaffected by the human turrets", he paused. Then continued, "Basically we'd be invincible against all the human weaponry systems, although there's a downside. We are vulnerable by the human meelee weapons. So, the best bet would be to fire from a safe place. Fire from space. The human armada is completely destroyed so, this would be an easy picking"
"Why can't you add another armor layer to the glaciermorphina?", one assimilator asked
"These new substance is very volatile against other synthetic materials that they've killed two of our scientists due to corrosion. In a big scale, it's like carrying a bomb while shooting in combat", he paused and thought for a while, "Besides, we'll fire from space, we don't even need to engage the humans directly anymore"
Everyone in the room fell silent, faint whispers are all over the place, then fell quiet again.
"All right, we agree to mass produce the new substance", one assimilator said.
"Very well then, dismissed", the leader announced.
Everyone left in the room, then the leader assimilator went back to his lair and turned on his screen.
The image he was seeing was the one from the spy his captain have sent. It was a drone. He don't care if it was destroyed, he has millions of these in reserve.
This was really the end for the human race, he thought.
He smiled grimacingly.
***Chapter 8: The Graviton cannon***
I didn't get to sleep that night, we still feared that another of these creatures would come and attack us again. All of us got to work.
It's either the "do nothing" patrol, but when the enemy comes, it's high risk, or the "work hard" ammunitions production, work your asses of, but be safe inside the HQ walls.
I'm assigned to scouting the area. So far there we're no attacks made at the HQ. I've heard that they are making good progress in the graviton cannon.
They have already stored the gravity, now they are making the device to shoot gravity at a very high speed. Storing a gravity is one thing, but making it go faster in another direction is another since gravity has a spin of one, meaning gravity is just rotating in one place, gravity needs something to push it at a very high speed.
That's as far as I know for now. I don't want to get into all the details since I might end up being a nerd and sit down all day at the science facility researching.
I guess for now, this was one of those boring days again, and back to the usual routine. For the scouting division though.
What bugs me though is that, knowing the assimilator tactics, they should've attacked us by now. But no. They really are making a ceasefire. I bet the assimilators are producing another new technology to aid them in fighting. Who knows.
In the science lab.
Scientists are working double in making the graviton cannon a reality. The president has given them an extra pair of hands at the start of the project, but the lack of knowledge the troops can offer, the scientists dismissed the troops an hour later.
The president always comes in at the lab once every three to four hours to check their progess, they knew that the president was anxious at getting his old life back, so did they. So did everyone else.
Back at the bunker.
Late in the afternoon, I heard a a noise, probably resembling to a hover craft hovering in the air, so I checked where it lead. The moment I got to the source though, it was gone. I returned to the bunker.
"Hey, Tang you heard that?", I asked.
"Heard what?"
"The hovering sound earlier"
"What hovering sound? The only sound I can hear was the footsteps of the troops walking by and you talking"
"I guess I'm just imagining things"
Three days passed by. But no attacks were made by the assimilators.
This day, the president himself made us wait at the waiting hall for about ten minutes or so, and then came in, smiling. I knew that the graviton cannon was done even before he announced it. I wanted to yell my "yipee!" but I kept my excitement until he finishes his speech.
"Today is a very important day for us", he began,"This is the day that would change the human race forever. What some of you thought was impossible is now possible". He paused for a while, I thought he was looking for a drumroll of somesort, "The Graviton Cannon is done!"
Then an uproar of hapiness aroused. Everyone in the hall was happy, everyone celebrated and shook hands to congratulate one another. Despite the noisiness in the hall, the president continued, "Here are the scientists that made it all possible, scientists come in here!". The scientists then came in the stage, everyone was happy since this was the rise of the human race again, we can now counter the assimilator technologies and gadgets. We humans are here to stay alive.
"Congratulate yourselves because you took part of this. Each and every one of you here are a part of the graviton's production since you defended it from the assimilators. I'm all very proud of you. Now, next time the assimilators come here to attack us, we now have a weapon against them"
After the speech the president left and we all celebrated, although it was only for a short time since the alert level is still high, we still have to do our jobs to scount and produce ammunition.
Despite the lack of celebration made, every troops morale was at a high. They now have a will to live. Everyone is waiting when the assimilators would attack them again.
***Chapter 9: The Big Attack***
Three days after the graviton cannon was finished, we've got what we want. For once, call me crazy, the assimilators are here again. They are in for a big surprise.
Everyone was immediately alerted that the assimilators are here, as expected though, they have new technology.
But this time, our technology would stand against their weapons and shield systems.
We've disguised our graviton cannon as an ordinary turret since we don't want to attract attention to the assimilators.
All the troops were in their position. The scientists aimed high at the sky, directly into space. Per shot, the cannon should have exactly about one to two minutes depending on how long the gravity can be filled in the cannon.
The first shot was fired directly at the armada.
For the first time, it was the most shocking experience for me.
What was shocking is that all our weapons were pulled to the cannon when the gravity was fired.
The feeling is completely unexplainable, they should make a word for this feeling. I felt heavier than my original weight. I also felt like I was pulled into the cannon. Our weapons were all pulled away from our arms into the cannon. All the troops were awed by the power of the cannon, but no time for that. We all grabbed our weapons and then returned to our posts to look at the sight of the sky. Once I knew that we can't look through our naked eyes, I grabbed my space goggles to look through the clouds and directly into space. The sight was incredible. They were shocked by what just happened. They don't even know what happened. I managed to make out a smile.
Most of their armada is obliterated, it's like a giant ship passed through those tiny ships and leaving a path on its wake.
The divisions were cut into two.
But what the incredible sight the space gave us was quite horrible on what happened here on Siegretron. One of the scientists was badly injured due to the pulling force the cannon produced, he was unconscious. All the other scientists were alive but injured. The medics rushed to the bleeding scientists and took it inside to cure him.
Then the siren alarmed.
I thought to myself, how could anything be inside the HQ? There were no ships nearby, and the assimilators gave us a ceasefire. This wasn't really a ceasefire.
Most of the troops rushed back into HQ while some just stayed outside since they were still on patrol, I bet though that they wanted to get inside HQ badly.
I was one of those who got in the HQ, the general rushed in and just said a few words.
"We have a spy loose inside the HQ, I want the half of you to go outside and resume patrol, while the rest stay here and search for that spy. The spy now knows we have a new weapon. We must hunt down and kill the spy before it calls for back-up"
The general then grabbed his weapon, then rushed outside to hunt the spy. We all did the same, we spread out throughout the HQ.
This spy, no doubt, is invisible since no one has got it yet.
But what the general failed to say is how to find the spy.
No one exactly knew since it is invisible.
But we cannot question the general know, we are trying to find a ghost.
I checked the roof of the HQ, where the graviton was placed, see if the spy is also a saboteur. But there were no signs. I then went to the dining hall, but in here too, there was no sign. I now went to the ammunitions bay, maybe it's gathering info regarding the turret ammunitions.
My hunch was right, I can see some rattling on the ammos lying in the table. But I didn't took the opportunity to fire yet since I might hit one of the ammunitions, then blew the entire place up. I just followed the spy until it left the premises of the bay, of course, still keeping my distance to avouid suspicion.
But then, bad luck struck. The graviton cannon then fired the second time. My weapon flew up in the air again, and then I was pushed out of balance and fell hard on the floor, this time though I didn't fall unconscious.
The spy then knew I was there, it stopped inspecting the ammunitions then became invisible. My best bet was that it fled.
I immediately left the room and searched desperately for the spy, hoping that I would find the spy.
Gotcha! The spy just made a fatal mistake, it was on the lab, some gas flowed out from the canisters, I can make out the figure of the spy. From the shape I could make out a form. It was small, no legs, its hovering. Has three wings, just like an airplane, two on the sides and one of top. It has a rotor to propel itself. I did not stand around to be fascinated, I took out my EMP pistol and shot it.
The creature fell and now it's not invisible anymore. I immediately spoke on the radio,
"I got the spy, its just outside the lab"
"Good job lieutenant", the general said, "We'll come over there now. Resume patrol everybody else"
Without a word we all left the HQ and back to our position, I again looked through my scope. Now the ships were no more. Just debris in the sky. It was over. The armada was defeated withing two shots of our cannon.
Everyone was happy, but made no effort to celebrate and just resumed patrol.
