Description Excerpt from the notes of Natalie 'Nat' Fontaine, known recently as the Threadmancer, an individual with the psionic ability to alter reality in addition to the typical psionic skills of telepathy, telekinesis, mind manipulation and control, and energy summoning and harvesting...

The tale begins when the ruling body of human space in the galaxy was the Confederacy.  Humanity had to deal with threats from aliens, mostly insectoid warriors, independent robotic adversaries and human pilots.  The time is about three centuries in the future.

Arc One:  Follows the crew of the corvette Audacity.  In this time, Star Command is a for profit agency.  Commander Sofia Jensen is not beyond shaking down Confederate freightes for revenue. Ensign Tara McEndicott, a gifted psionic, loses control when she thinks the executive officer Janey Kalas is trying to sell them out when Jensen is investigated by Internal Affairs and, after a struggle for control, is detained but Jensen drops the charges.  The crew goes on a dangerous mission where previous Star Command ships have been annihilated by robot ships.  Turns out that the robots are psionic as well and try to take over McEndicott again (they were responsible for her earlier attack on Kalas) and eventually Kalas is able to devise a defense and offensive strategy that leads them to victory.  McEndicott is arrested.  The ship is almost demolished and limps home.

Arc Two:  Troubles from Arc One lead to the crew being investigated by Internal Affairs agent Karol MacAvoy who is also psioinic and has an agenda of her own.  She's working with the robots to stage a coup.  Meanwhile Tara's sister Megan McEndicott is recruited to work with an intelligence agent Jessalyn Sanchez looking into possible unrest.  MacAvoy gets robot war units on to Star Command's orbital HQ and are ready to blow it up.  That is defeated by the actions of McEndicott, Star Command marine Nadia Ionescu, and Sanchez who is revealed to actually be Tara McEndicott working under cover.  One explosion takes place and Tara is blown out of the station into space.

Act Three:  The newly commissioned Audacity 3 frigate is ready for action and new crew members are assigned, including a new Second Officer, Aileen Hauser and a new ensign, Natalie Fontaine. A campaign is launched against the robot fleet.  Megan and Aileen fall in love.  Tara is saved from near death and has her consciousness transferred to a cyborg body (all that is left of her is a little bit of brain matter).  The action culminates with the invasion of the robot homeworld where a couple of Confederate fleet superdreadnoughts were disabled by robotic nanospores.  The ground forces become divided and Megan and Aileen go on alone.  Megan is captured for interrogation purposes as the robots thought she was Tara, someone they wanted as their agent, and Aileen injects herself with an illegal 23rd century performance enhancing drug and goes on a rampage, single handedly defeating the robotic forces and rescuing Megan.  Aileen discovers that the robots have a facility to the south where they are planning to launch thousands of drones to infect the Earth with the nanospores.  Tara gets the superdreadnought online and launches a massive strike at the South facility.  The South facility has a specialized reflector shield that sends the attack back at the superdreadnought obliterating it.  Tara launches her consciousness toward the planet, looking for a human host, settling in Megan's mind.  At the same time the robots are chasing Megan and Aileen and a mortar strikes explodes overhead with a powerful blast.  Tara defends them as best they can but Megan receives severe head trauma and Aileen is knocked unconscious.

Act Four:  Robots have taken over the Earth with their spores and their army.  Remants of High Command order the returning Audacity 3 to locate scientist Lydia MacAvoy (sister to Karol) who's facility was captured by the robots.  A daring raid by the crew of Audacity penetrates the airspace and captures the bunker.  The crew is separated again and most of the crew rescues MacAvoy.  Except she was pulling the robot's strings and is the most powerful psionic in the galaxy.  She easily captures the crew.  Aileen is killed in the action, trying to resist.  The events awaken Nadia's latent psionic ability but she is no match for MacAvoy, and Nat's own ability was awakened earlier. Tara shows up later to rescue them and she launches a sneak attack on MacAvoy which gives her a mild headache at worst.  MacAvoy laughs it off and unleashes attack after attack against Tara who is helpless against such power and the final attack against Tara kills her.  Except MacAvoy knows she needs people loyal to her and resurrects Tara.  Tara is able to reach out to Nadia and enlist her help to psionically enter MacAvoy's mind.  They are barely able to take control of MacAvoy and Tara has to divide her time keeping MacAvoy locked up in her body and keeping Megan's body alive with Megan's brain recovering under lengthy healing processes.  Tara and Nadia who had been getting close end up getting married.

Act Five:  Two years later:  Tara has become most adept at neutralizing stray robotic elements.  She was gifted before but this is even better.  It is revealed that over a year and a half ago, MacAvoy broke out of her mental confinement and took control of Tara's body, imprisoning Tara, while impersonating Tara.  No one suspects.  MacAvoy tortures Tara routinely but Tara realizes that MacAvoy wants power to help the Confederacy against the impending insectoid invasion, offering the olive branch of peace.  While she is being tortured.  Meanwhile MacAvoy has been psionically controlling pirate fleets and getting them to join the Confederacy under her command.  At this point, Jensen and Kalas are retired and running for the Presidency (and Vice President) and MacAvoy/Tara is in command of Audacity 4.  Over a six month period, MacAvoy softens toward Tara and Tara and she enter a strange romantic period.  MacAvoy takes control of one of her pirates who is similar enough to Tara in looks and implants Tara's mind there and comes clean and she keeps Tara's body.  Megan is healed and she gets Tara's body and MacAvoy grab another pirate body.  MacAvoy goes public and as she is critical to many defense projects, no charges are levied against her. The Campaign for the Presidency heats up and Jensen wins!

Act Six:  New recruits to the new ship Aileen Hauser include Druann Richardson, a powerful psionic who immediately takes a dislike to Natalie and Tara.  Natalie's captured by Dru who wants to impress that she wants to replace Natalie.  Tara rescues her in a contest with Dru and barely wins against Dru's raw power and Tara wants her disciplined, but MacAvoy is intrigued and wants to see how this dynamic plays out.  In a highly publicized bout, Tara and Dru square off and Dru is winning but Tara is able to outthink her at the end and is victorious.  If Tara won, she would have kept Nat on the ship and Dru would be out but Tara realizes Dru's fierceness is just what they needed and asks for both Nat and Dru on the ship.  And while this is happening, MacAvoy and Dru fall for each other and Tara is dumped.  And then the campaign is launched against the bugs with some successes until MacAvoy believes she has to take on the psionic Queen one on one.  She loses and is captured.  Dru blames Tara and challenges Tara and is on the verge of defeating her when Tara leads her into her lab.  Telepathically controlling Megan, Tara has Megan turn on a time control machine that freezes Dru in place.  The question of what to do with her is raised and eventually Tara decides to rehabilitate Dru, entering her mind.  Where Dru is slowed down, Tara expeiriences the same symptom but Dru had long ago developed hyperacceleration and defeats the sluggish Tara.  She forces the two iof them to switch bodies and Tara is in Dru's body and is needed to develop techniques against the insectoids.  Much like with MacAvoy, early animosity is eventually worn down by Tara's kindness and they fall in love.  Tara is imported into Dru's consciousness while Druann (to work on getting the prisoner released) and is called to the President's Office to discuss, espeically as Tara's strategies won the Bug War, when strange feelings overwhelm her and it is a trap laid by her sister, Keisha Yolandasdottir and with MacAvoy out of the way, no one can stand in Keisha's way and she launches a coup, capturing Dru.

Act Seven:  Two Years later:  Keisha is The Empyrean One, self proclaimed goddess/deity and ruler of the galaxy and internally impresses talented young psionics to be turned into cyborgs in her security force.  One such target is Monica McEndicott who is apprehended but escapes, along with her cat Quasar.  Dru with Tara (in her mind) escape from the facility where they work for Keisha.  In that time, Tara disables Kesiah's psi spying network. The crew of the Aileen Hauser are fugitives who try to rescue Monica and they all end up together with Dru as well.  Quasar was at one time in Keisha's control and he had latent telepathic abilities so she (the cat) takes over Monica's mind and starts to try and subvert the team but Tara (who shared space with Dru) puts a stop to that. They steal the top line battleship Indefatigable and make their escape.  They are victorious until they are pursued by the ISS Terrakonn and their briliant esper commander Abby Mikkelsen and the defeat of the Indefatigable seems likely until Monica realizes that Abby is using techniques that Monica revealed in a Dark Web document and is given command.  She is able to anticipate Abby and are victorious.  Keisha is annoyed and plans to harvest untold power from a supernova explosion but she needs the secret of time control that Tara developed and laid a trap and she is onboard the Indefatigable.  Tara is no match for her raw power but Tara is brilliant and opens up a wormhole and sends Keisha off the ship and they make their escape.  At the same time, another powerful psionic is to be recruited, one Nyssa Mannheim, but she is able to defeat her captors and take over a lieutenant and eventually the whole town.  She gets wind of Keisha's plan to harvest a supernova as Keisha was able to grab that information from Tara's mind and on board the battlecruiser Raev Gundide, Nyssa waylays Keisha's ship, takes a shuttle into the heart of the supernova and harvests untold power.  Keisha is deposed and runs for her life.  Nyssa disbands the forced cyborg program and promises to undo the harm Keisha did.  The only thing she requires is the military to swear allegiance to her as their Queen Monarch.  The crew on Indefatigable refuses.
