During the Second World War Portugal was under the Estado Novo regime, under the government of António de Oliveira Salazar. Officially, Portugal declared neutrality in 1939 despite the former Luso-British Alliance having maintained it until the end of hostilities. So why on this map was it swallowed up by Spain when both were countries that had political and ideological proximity to extreme right-wing nationalism?
Here in this senario everything indicates that Portugal would go straight to the Axis side in the War, so I don't see Spain annexing Portugal when both would maintain a more united relationship.
