Hello! So you want to learn how to make your very own adorable Squirtle. Maybe you've crocheted before, maybe you're a complete beginner who's feeling just a little bit doubtful that you're up for this. If you already know how to crochet amigurumi, skip down to the pattern starting at the heading "what you'll need". If you're a beginner, keep reading.
First thing I like to tell people when they're learning amigurumi is: "if you can make a ball, you can make most amigurumi". I went through a few videos, and I found this one if you've never made a ball before:
Her way of making the ball is very beginner-friendly, so definitely check it out if you're unsure how to start!
Still feeling a bit unsure? Check out this fantastic article by Mouselemur So You Want to Crochet Amigurumi
*Note* The (# stitches) at the end of most lines is how many stitches you should have at the end of each round of crochet.
*Additional note* at the time of taking the picture for this, I was only crocheting through the back loops. I'd suggest crocheting through BOTH loops. See this helpful article for clarification: www.thesprucecrafts.com/croche…
This is just like how she started the ball in the video. You can also SC 8 into a magic loop here if you're an experienced crocheter and prefer that.
This means that you'll be doing a SC into each stitch around, increasing the number of stitches to 16. Again, this process is in the video starting at 4:40. She is using a different number of stitches, so don't be concerned when she talks about "12 stitches" - you're on the right track if you have 16 at the end of this round!
Here's an article about increasing in crochet if you need more: www.anniescatalog.com/crochet/…
In row 3, you'll SC into one stitch, INC (SC 2) into the next. Repeat this 8 times.
In these rows you're SC into each stitch around.
If you don't know how to colour change, check out this video:

Alternate Method for face:
Alternatively. if you don't want to use safety eyes you can needle felt the details for the face. I've included a close-up photo below, and this excellent tutorial by aphid777
Enjoy your new Squirtle!

Thank you! Especially for the amigurumi ball-video. I want to start with my first amigurumi doll and I can only make granny square blankets, please wish me luck
