Description
This little fellow is from a much larger painting I'm currently working on for the upcoming 'DragonSong' book from SQP.As my grannie used to say "Don't play with matches, or highly flammable dragons". Important advice to live by.

No real trick to it .. work out the shape and your light source (for softer or sharper edges on your shadow) and it often helps not to keep the shadow the same 'density' through out (mayble pick up a little of the objects colour the closer the shadow is to said object). Gak! That wasnt very articulate, but hopefully you can make some sense in there!!

Thanks! I did a couple of paintings of crocodiles earlier and they were a good warm up for doing a dragon!

This reminds me a little of the adorably pathetic dragons from Pratchett's Discworld series.

Big Terry Pratchett fan!! Loved his stuff since I was a kid. He had a signing session here in Melbourne many years ago and I organized a half day off work to catch the train into the city and get some books signed. Wondered why there was no queue at the place until I found I'd got the date wrong and he'd been there the week before. Never did tell my boss!

Its kind of a tragedy what happened to Terry!!! Particularly someone whos mind is obviously so sharp and active.
I am familiar with Paul Kidby's illustration - his artwork appears on the covers printed in Australia. I really loved the earlier zany covers by Josh Kirby - they weren't necessarily a reflection of what was in the book, but wild and full of energy - so it took me a little bit of getting used to Pauls work, which is more static but methodically researched and meticulously done. It has totally grown on me over the years and I think I have most, if not all his covers as well as the art of discworld etc.

It's definitely a tragedy, but less terrible than it could be because Terry is clearly handling it all with such grace.
I really prefer Kidby's illustrations to Kirby's-- They match so closely what I saw in my mind's-eye, before ever seeing his work. He captures the characters so completely.
Anyhow, keep up the great work. This dragon definitely feels a bit like Kidby to me, which is hard to achieve.

Cheers man! Translucency is something I'm still working on and this piece is more a case of information gathered from past observations than taking specific photos per say. Not sure I'd say the end result is totally correct - haven't seen enough fire dragons to be sure!
