Description
"Well, well, I do believe that's a wrap on our magic duel, Moony. Goodness me, you're so adorable right now, I could just gobble you right up-!""Do not patronize me, witch. You haven't won-I'll best you yet!" Moondancer squeaked indignantly, kicking in vain with his teeny mouse paws. His voice had become quite high-pitched and cute, though it seethed with self-righteous fury.
Pandora blinked. "Moondancer, dearie....you've been turned into a field mouse. Own up to it. Certainly this is game over-I mean, can you even shapeshift yourself back to normal?"
Moondancer glanced up at his nub of a horn, and for a moment, he struggled to call upon his magic, cheeks turning pink with exertion. Finally, his horn lit, then made a small sputtering sound, and he panted.
"....No." He folded his mouse arms with a huff. He pointedly didn't look at her.
"Well." Pandora smiled, amused. "I could change you back, I suppose. On the condition that you promise not to fire magical lightning at me when I'm just trying to order an oatburger. Really, a sneak attack at lunchtime? Moony, Moony, Moondancer, I thought you had better manners than that."
Moondancer glared at her, twitching his whiskers. "A true mage would never let their guard down. A magic duel can strike at any moment. You should have been prepared."
"Uh huh. And what about the oatburger cook? You destroyed half his restaurant's drywall work."
"Irrelevant." Moondancer said darkly. "Darkness will fall on whomever stands in the way of my rightful victory. I won't rest until I defeat you, she-beast. I will not rest until all of ponykind stands awed and cowed before the great and powerful Moondanc-"
"Blah blah, ultimate sorcerer, blah blah descendant of Starswirl, blah. Geez, Moony, you're a broken record. Y'know, I'd eat you, but I bet a grumpy little mouse like you would give me crazy indigestion."
"I'm not afraid of you." Quite warily, Moondancer eyed the great serpent's sharp fangs. "R-release me, witch."
"Alrighty. Good luck figuring out how to shapeshift back into a big snobby stick-up-your-bum unicorn." Pandora released him, and he dropped to the ground.
"Oh, I relish the challenge, she-demon." Moondancer balled his little fists, defiant....before looking down uncertainly at his paws. "...There must be a textbook on this sort of thing somewhere."
"I'm sure. Well it's been fun, but I do have an oatburger to eat. If I can even find the damned thing in the rubble from your magic blast." Pan had begun slithering away, thoroughly annoyed. Moondancer called after her, mortified and furious.
"This isn't over! I'll get you!" He squeaked, stomping a paw. "Our next duel will see you defeated, I swear on Starswirl's ghost!"
Pandora turned and winked. "Sounds like a date, Marshmallow. Bring it on." And she snickered when it elicited another round of angry, red-faced sputtering.
"Honestly, Moondancer, you never learn."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
as adults, Moondancer challenges his rival Pan to lots of random magic duels. He's never won and that really, really rankles him
Pan finds it half amusing, half annoying, and really wishes Moondancer would drop the noble crusader thing and that they could just go back to being friends again
related:
i realized i haven't shown much of Pan's shapeshifting abilities. She loves becoming various animals, with snakes, big cats, gerbils, and chickens being her favorites. She's also fond of magicking Moondancer into various cute rodents when he tries picking fights
Wow Moony, are you supposed to be trying to SAVE equestria from Pandora's 'evil', or are you trying to conquer it for yourself? Those aren't the kinds of things a noble wizard would say or do, those are the kinds of things a psychopathic tyrant in the making would say...
He's literally using Sombra's old horn. I'm pretty sure that's exactly the sort of question Lop wants you to ask whenever Moondancer shows up.
I know that, but it's hard to pinpoint when exactly he's using it. Still, it's clear that it's started to screw with his mind a little if he's so obsessed with being a powerful wizard capable of beating Pandora that he's just over the line of caring for innocent bystanders and demands that ponies worship his skills. Even if protecting others was a thinly veiled excuse to justify his jealousy and rivalry with Pan, he has to be a bit touched to not hear the evil coming out of his mouth. Pan was his friend and thinks he's harmless, to to an outside observer(and the pony whose restaurant he just blew up) he's a literal menace, for more than Pandora could be. At least she doesn't go around blasting buildings apart when she wants to have a friendly duel with a friend. And with Moony, it's not friendly in the least. If Pan weren't so powerful that she could literally toy with him, he wouldn't hesitate to seriously injure or kill her or others that got in his way. And that is NOT OK!
It's not even about protecting people. Moondancer is someone who has mroe than a few problems because of how he was raised and such, namely through Trixie. His cutie mark is a wand with a ribbon, representing his lvoe of dance, but instead devotes his time into an obsessive goal for the sake of his ego. Inferiority complex. Lop has even calle dhim entitled.
Pinksneasel In reply to Void-Wolf [2017-07-20 03:52:15 +0000 UTC]
the worst thing is is that he started thinking himself inferior BEFORE Pandora decided to be a princess of chaos. As we can see from that time he was talking to Cupcake and throwing away his old things, he wanted to become more than JUST a dancer because he knew that Pandora was working hard to become a princess and might forget a little nothing like him. Sure they were still rivals as kids, but they were friends, and he didn't want to lose that. Then Pan quit on everyone after her breakdown and he felt betrayed since worked so hard to become somepony like she was. So he redoubled his efforts and swore to become more powerful than her if she gave up on her 'full potential'.
I know. The whole thing is just a big ugly mess caused by hardly anyone staying true to themselves. They always want to be better, aim higher, and get the acceptance of their peers. Too bad the Dancer!verse where they do what they want and live happily ever after is little more than a pipe dream...
Noooo...
From what she's showed of Dancer!verse Moony and Pan get married, he stays a dancer, and she never stresses about being a princess. Lop even said it's the happiest AU for the both of them.
"Literally toy" with him? I'm now imagining her turning him into an actual toy, because that's what the word "literally" means. What sort of toy is retroactively left as an exercise to the reader.
π: 0 β©: 1
Pinksneasel In reply to HeraldOfOpera [2017-07-02 06:36:54 +0000 UTC]
To 'toy' with someone means 'to play with'. So yes, Pandora literally plays with him in these bouts. Also, Websters Dictionary has recently changed the definition of the word 'literally' to include 'figuratively' as one of its meanings, due to popular usage.
*mic drop*
HeraldOfOpera In reply to Pinksneasel [2017-07-02 14:21:11 +0000 UTC]
*picks up mic*
That use of 'toy' is meant to evoke 'used as if they were a toy' and I was pointing out that Pandora could take it still more literally. Also, Webster's effectively changed the definition of the word 'literally' to include 'not literally' and thus caused the word to mean nothing, which may reflect popular usage but is still unbelievably stupid. I personally prefer that words mean things, and a dictionary company of all things disagreeing with that irks me.
π: 0 β©: 1
Pinksneasel In reply to HeraldOfOpera [2017-07-02 20:36:35 +0000 UTC]
Still, a 'toy' is simply something you play with in the barest sense of the word. Of course, Moony is not a 'thing' and rather a person(or pony), but you can still refer to living things as 'things' even if it's rude to do so, especially if it's a person/pony. But like you said, Panny can turn Moony into anything, thing or not.
And while I brought up that point, I still personally hate that they changed that, since literally is now a nonsense word that stupid millennials can say means whatever they want it to by being technically correct when they use it figuratively. But still, I did in fact mean 'literally' literally when I said she was literally toying with him.XD
"Stories about ponies are stories about people" is a semi-famous quote from a semi-famous MLP fanfiction writer, and I plan on having a character punch saidΒ writer in the face for implying with that quote that MLP characters aren't people. (It ends poorly for said character because said writer is military)
I personally think "literally" should be reserved for when "figuratively" would actually make sense, and should probably be omitted unless the latter would make more sense than the former. If your definition is taken as truth, then there isn't such a thing as "figuratively" toying with someone, so I can't do that. The only form of "literally toying" I can think of that would make sense to actually put in those terms would be "verbing the noun 'toy'" so that's where my mind went.
Yeah, I'm sure we'd consider other sapient beings to be 'people' if our intellect is similar enough that you couldn't tell what they were if you were blindfolded.
And yeah, I can see your reasoning.
