the lighting / shadows look amazing and add a realness to it but one thing i never understood is how do you actually know how shadows work on an inflated person? maybe its I'm just crap as an artist but i cant grasp stuff like thatΒ

with this pic, a good part of it was that i was using a ref of someone in an inflation suit.
other parts, just a semi understanding of lighting and a lot of trial and error.

what tradition are you basing it on exactly? suit inflation?
As far as I know the whole concept of an inflation turning someone into a sphere with just a head, hands and feet pretty much spun off of and entirely originated with violet, who is obviously too young to have breasts. Inflation has existed long before that but if you actually look at ones in old cartoons, it was always just an enlarged/stubbier regular body shape, this distinct roundness didn't really come along in any media I can think of until after the first Wonka movie, and hasn't often left our community. Given no gum was ever given to a full grown woman in said film, it might be that the gum causes the breasts to get bigger (or at least stay as they are) and people in the community drew breastless spheres at first simply because they were basing it off someone who doesn't have them in the first place.
People still have aesthetic preferences for it regardless, but I've always both aesthetically preferred them and found them to make more sense for reasons like that, but I can see why you'd want to try things differently for a change.
