Description
Well. As foretold a new Fanart - this time from the famous Halo-Universe! It depicts actually my spartan model I use while playing. I took some screenshots as reference for the Spartan and the Covenant Cruiser. I am quite happy with the outcomeTook about 10 hours + 2 hour of gaming... ehm I mean searching for reference in the games
Hope you like it!
EDIT: I finally released the Covenant counterpart to this piece! Please check it out!

Are you gonna put this one together with the other one? I think that that would make a very good poster.

I considered it during the production of this one, but I decided against it, because this one needed a different lightning. But I made them similar enough in matters of composition to leave the possibility of a middle part, to connect these both. So maybe thereΒ΄ll be another counterpart

Yeah, I was thinking that if you just sandwiched them, the Elite and Spartan-III would be just a little too close fo still be charging at each other. That's a good idea.

This is awsome. I really love how made the lighting in this, it really makes the pic more dramatic. Great job! I'm a huge call of duty fan, and I really dont care for halo that much, but I think you might have just changed that. MIGHT have.

Lol. It would be a huge compliment if I really had changed your mind
But you canΒ΄t compare these franchises; theyΒ΄re just so different...
But thanks anyway!

Halo ring group. hello, this is an amazing piece of artwork, but is not the art work we like in the group. It is mainly just for Forerunner art work.

hui~
i never knew that the halo warriors were spartans!!
but that explains a lot
well now to the picture
you know, i always have to give my shit to your pictures xD
the dude:
he is
fucking
awesome! (awesome in the good way, a friend of mine always thinks of awesome in the bad way, so i have to say 'in the good way')
the colours, the highlights, the shadows, the damn texture!!!
dude
you are a god
the background:
i love it
it really looks like war
i mean, war is evil and so zeug
but halo is war
and there is really the effect of war
and that's good, because i think you wanted it to look like that
also the verteilung from light and shadow is quite stunning
(i love how you make that staubwolke)
and what i also have to give my senf to:
the underground looks really realistic, thanks to the reflections of the light
i still have no clue how you do that...
and i will never now... (or be able to do the same... on ps)
the picture is the win
even if i have no idea what that huge metal beetle does up there, but i'm quite sure that you either have to destroy it or it destroys the enemys
that picture is really the win!
well done dude

"Spartan" is just their codename. TheyΒ΄re enhanced humans after all^^
I always appreciate "your shit" it is very enlightening
Thank you very much for the kind review! Newer thought to get such a positive response from this picture
And that evil beetle is a huge battleship But most mistake it as something else: see other posts^^

Awesome work! Did you do this in Photoshop? How'd you make the armour look exactly like armour, D: I can never do that.

LordDoomhammer In reply to newguy2445 [2011-10-02 09:48:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes. All made in Photoshop. I took quite many reference shots from the game itself. For the Spartan about 12 pictures were used
But looking at your gallery I canΒ΄t see your point, that the armour doesnΒ΄t look exactly like armour - theyΒ΄re fantastic!

What brushes do you use? Just basic round brushes? Or do you use special texture ones?
Thanks, but if you're talking about the pieces involving actual game models / renders, I can't take credit for that as that's thanks to the original texture artist.
Here's my latest attempt at doing armour in corel painter. [link] I just can't get it to look anything like yours, or other concept artists. :S

LordDoomhammer In reply to newguy2445 [2011-10-02 11:34:29 +0000 UTC]
Util a few months ago I used only round brushes, now I use various textures etc.
Well, they look great nontheless, so a compliment here is in place
What is most important in paintings in general is the fact, that there is always ambient light. So in case for your MC, his downside-parts would be highlighted by a soft... blue, white whatever light as the main lightsource appears to be on top. My Armour works unly due to the weathering and battle damage. Take a look at any metal object. After some time the paint at the edges will get off, revealing the metal underneath, which gives it itΒ΄s metallic feeling.
I hope this helps a bit

newguy2445 In reply to LordDoomhammer [2011-10-02 12:05:31 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I appreciate it.
So do you manually draw in all of the weathering etc? Or do you use textures?
The main thing I get frustrated with is the transition from light to dark, usually everything ends up looking too round or too smooth. :S But I shall try out your advice, so thank you!

LordDoomhammer In reply to newguy2445 [2011-10-02 12:08:39 +0000 UTC]
YouΒ΄re welcome!
Well, the main shapes have textures on it to prevent a smooth surface, but the scratches and battle damages are all drawn manually
Play around with the custom brushes, combine them and so and you may get a very pleasing result. ItΒ΄s just a matter of trial&error and stubbormness

newguy2445 In reply to LordDoomhammer [2011-10-03 12:48:56 +0000 UTC]
So how about all of the armour detail? All of the bits that stick out or stick in, do you draw those with a brush? How do you get them to look so precise and perfect?
Thanks for your help by the way.

LordDoomhammer In reply to newguy2445 [2011-10-04 10:08:00 +0000 UTC]
ThatΒ΄s all painted, but I spent almost 40-60% of the time only on that aspect, so it takes time but is as well the most important part. The rest ist just to enhace the Details of the model (light, shadows, surroundings, etc.)
And also necessary are good references. I couldnΒ΄t do this kind of detail without
YouΒ΄re welcome!
