Description
When the newcomers from Last Notch had made the announcement that the Nook would no longer be open to stay for anyone who had lost their baby spot, Hadi and Genesis had felt more than a bit distressed, along with any others. The two of them had gotten jobs in town before then to save up, Hadi as a waitress and Genesis as a lamplighter, so they at least had some funds to their name, but it wasn't much. Between them they discussed getting an apartment, but prices in Wynsiph were also rising due to a growing demand since wyngrew left and right were preparing to leave the Nook and find an alternative to the shabby Cranny. It was a small relief when Tabbris, Hadi's mother, heard the news and came to see Hadi right away. For Hadi, at least. "Hadi, dear," she fretted, shaking her head, "if they're kicking you out and you don't want to live in the Cranny, there's always room for you at my house. You know that, right?" She peered past Hadi to look at Genesis, who was sitting on her bed and trying not to look at the two of them. "You're welcome to come too, Genesis. Would you like that? We can even remodel again to add on a couple of extra rooms if you two don't mind pitching in some of the coin and work."
"I... I don't know if...." Genesis kept glancing towards Hadraniel, trying to see what exactly she thought about all of this. Truth be told, Genesis didn't like Tabbris very much. She had felt some animosity towards her ever since Hadi had introduced the two of them shortly after their growth spurts ended. Though Hadi had never really lamented over her lack of parents when they were kids, as some other Nooklings did, Genesis thought it was cruel of Tabbris to just suddenly show up in her late childhood claiming she wanted to be a mother now. To make matters worse, she kept a different egg not long after she reunited with Hadraniel. Hadi never seemed bothered by it, but it just rubbed Genesis the wrong way.
"If you'll let me, I'd like to stay with you," Hadi agreed, stunning Genesis into silence. She glanced at Genesis, her usual chilled-out expression on her face, but Genesis could see the apology and hope in her eyes. She could read Hadi's expressions like an open book despite how her face rarely changed. "I know we were talking about other plans, but... it's a good chance to be with my family. You should come with us, Genesis. We could be out of here by tomorrow."
Genesis really didn't want to. She really, really didn't want to live with the wyngro who had abandoned Hadraniel in the Nook, had not been there for so much of her childhood, and suddenly showed up like she had a right to Hadraniel's time. How Hadi didn't mind all of that, she would never know.
"... Sure," Genesis said. It was better than letting Hadi go there alone and not know what she was putting up with. Besides, being a lamplighter wasn't exactly the most profitable job in the world, and she wasn't sure that she could get a place without Hadi's help.
Tabbris beamed at their agreement, oblivious to Genesis's spiteful thoughts. "That's great! Do you think you two can have all of your things ready to move by noon tomorrow? I can rent a cart and a rattle cow if you have enough things, or just bring by a wagon that we can pull. Oh! And if Nyssa isn't going anything much, we could make it a whole-family event!"
"You seem excited," Hadi said, voice still even, but Tabbris caught the faint amusement in her tone. She was learning, bit by bit, to read her daughter's moods.
"I am," Tabbris laughed, brushing her bangs back out of her face. "I'm excited to be getting to share my home with two more of my girls!" She tilted her head as she looked past Hadi to give Genesis a fond smile.
She wanted to scowl back, but she didn't, for Hadi's sake. She just gave Tabbris an impassive stare, hoping she got the message - Genesis was uninterested in being considered one of "her girls." Genesis had never had much of a problem being parentless, and she wasn't going to let this wyngro make her inti a charity case.
"I'm excited, too." Genesis's eyes snapped to Hadi, widening slightly. She'd never heard Hadi admit to being excited before. Her chest tightened as she saw an expression on her face that she'd never seen before, a smile that softened her eyes and made her seem truly happy and at ease.
"We should start packing," Genesis said quickly, cutting off anything further from either of them. She wanted Tabbris to be gone as soon as possible. She didn't want to see that look on Hadi's face anymore.
"Oh, you're right! Do you girls want help with anything?" Tabbris asked energetically, looking to Hadi this time.
Hadi didn't seem to realize that Genesis wanted Tabbris to leave as she stepped back into the room, going over to the space where her storage drawers were. "Only if you want. We probably don't have that much stuff between us, but we'll need boxes to take it in."
"Mm. I'll go find some somewhere," Genesis muttered, brushing past Tabbris as she walked out the door. Chii, if she couldn't stand this much, how was she going to be able to stand living with them? If it wasn't for Hadi's sake, well, she would never do it. She just had to keep her from getting hurt by that mother of hers, that was all.
That was all.
