Description

The night was cold and dark and wet, but those were all things that Penumbra and Drake were used to. They could see perfectly fine in the depths of the lake, so a stormy night was no worse. The raindrops slid off of their snouts and into the water below as they splashed playfully on the lake’s surface.

The pink finn chirped merrily at their sibling, calling over their attention, which Penumbra reacted to with a trill of their own. Drake dipped under the surface, making Penumbra squeal out a gleeful little noise, diving after them. They were already starting to speed away when Penumbra’s eyes adjusted to being below the water’s surface again, but Penumbra could be faster.

They darted after Drake, allowing their sibling to have the lead for a while, but Penumbra was stronger between the two of them. Drake was weaker, more prone to sickness on the occasions that they got sick. Still, Penumbra eventually caught up and nipped at Drake’s heels, signalling that they had been caught before turning tail and moving away in a flash.

Penumbra slowed after getting a head start, down to a speed that they knew Drake would be more comfortable with, but would still be somewhat of a challenge for them. They needed to learn to be stronger in case something ever happened to Penumbra, which could happen at any time living in their environment, so Pen was always trying to push them to go further, test their limits. Drake, for their part, was willing to go along with it, sometimes catching on to Penumbra’s ploys but most of the time just enjoying their games.

When Drake finally managed to catch up, Penumbra let them collide into their side, then the two started to wrestle in the water. Bubbles filtered up through the water as they laughed, having fun, and eventually they broke apart to go back above water to splash around.

They were so preoccupied with their fun, something they had to learn to enjoy in the few moments that they had it, that they didn’t see the wooden vessel approaching until it was too late. Penumbra let out a series of alarmed clicks and chirps as the structure loomed out of the darkness, slicing through the veil of rain and night.

A beast wreathed in shadow stood on its hind legs on the deck, something the two of them had seen before. It brandished a long stick with a tricky little trap on the end, something they’d seen before too, something used to catch fish. This time, though, it seemed they were aiming for Drake, who was frozen in fear at the sudden appearance.

Penumbra let out an outraged cry as they tore through the water, pushing their sibling out of harm’s way at the last second.

Go! Penumbra clicked angrily at Drake, struggling in the confines of the trap. Go home! Safe! Safe you! I fight!

Sibling! Drake clicked back helplessly, but after a few more angry clicks from Penumbra and seeing a second figure with another stick appear, Drake disappeared below the waves.

As Penumbra was taken into the cabin of what they would learn was called a boat, they wondered if they would ever see their sibling again.
