Something was missing, Akima felt, looking at himself in appraisal in the mirror. Something.... Hmm. He thought and thought as he gazed at his reflection, rubbing his chin. Well, he was just a kid, so he didn't have the cool, mature looks that he desired just yet. But this was something... different. He needed something to add some fresh flair to his looks!

Making a decision, he snuck into his dad's room and pulled out a box of old clothes that they had put away. He dug through without regard to the order of things, trying to find something that he vaguely remembered was there from the times when he had to bundle up in the winter. He huffed in triumph, smirking to himself, as he pulled it out. Yes, these would do well! He left the pile of clothes in a state of disarray after heaping them back into the box, plodding off to look at himself in the mirror again.

Something still seemed to be missing, though. The nearly-brand-new pair of earmuffs around his neck looked cool, and the insides were soft, and they would help block out sound when he wanted to focus on his thoughts instead of listening to the other noisy kids at school. He couldn't put his finger on what the problem was. Oh, well. He put that aside in his mind, thinking that he could probably figure it out later.

"You look stupid in that," Fuyune snorted, raising an eyebrow at Akima. "You know it's not winter anymore, right?"

"Shut up," Akima snapped, feeling a little embarrassed as he rubbed his nose. "It's still cold some days. Besides, when I wear them I can block out annoying kids like you!"

"First of all we're the same age," Fuyune said, shaking her head. "Second, why can't you have Natsumi's fashion sense? Look at what she wore today!" She gestured towards Natsumi with a look of smug pride, though she seemed to feel a bit uncomfortable at being singled out.

"It's just a ribbon that I got from my mom," Natsumi mumbled, shaking her head. "It's really not that big of a deal, Fuyune."

"Besides, are we not going to talk about your fashion?" Akima said stubbornly, refusing to let this go. "Natsumi makes everything look good anyway, but what's up with your baskets and the blanket? You almost look like you're trying to imitate having an ori saddle."

Fuyune's chest and cheeks puffed up in indignation even as her face went warm. "They're functional! It's not like it's easy to carry stuff around with these baby paws!" She stomped one paw to emphasize her situation, then whirled around. "C'mon, Natsumi, let's go to class! Akima isn't allowed to play or study with us after school today!"

"Don't be too mad," Natsumi soothed, following Fuyune towards the class, even as Akima grumbled behind them, "Not like I wanted to anyway."

Those two were his closest friends, despite how their interaction just went. There was always sort of a gap between him and other kids, though, one that made him feel out of place, and he wasn't sure why, but he never felt like he could bridge that gap just yet. There always just felt like there was... something missing. Something that he needed before he could properly join in with everyone else. Something he couldn't... quite... place. Perhaps one day he would figure it out for himself, but until then, maybe he should apologize to Fuyune.
