Description
Before Spencer even got to Dr. F's, his rolling stomach had settled into an alarming peacefulness. He knocked on the door for the doctor, and when he responded, Spencer opened with, "My name is Spencer. My mom is hurt very badly after what I think was an attack by some intruders. She's in our house on the edge of town and I believe she's bleeding out. I can lead you there."-------
Dr. F did all he could, and Spencer stayed in the waiting room, not allowed to be with his mother because Dr. F thought the sight would be too much for him. But the damage was done. By the time Dr. F came out to tell him that they would be tranferring her to a hospital in Antova because he could do no more than stabilize her, Spencer had already guessed this would be the case. Russel came by to ask questions, but Spencer couldn't tell him much. He was at the library all day, reading, like he always did.
Not like you'd be any help if you were there.
The thought came quickly, and Spencer repressed it just as fast. There was no use in blaming himself. He'd had no idea this was going to happen.
He was allowed to say goodbye to his mother, then Russel told him another bit of news that he didn't stomach as well as his mother going to Antova.
"You can't exactly stay in the hospital in Antova all the time, and nooks are a lot different up there than they are here.... Of course, you can't stay at your home alone. It'll still belong to you and your mom, but until you're all grown up, I'm going to have to ask you to stay at the Nook, for your own safety, kiddo."
Spencer flinched at the kindness in Russel's voice. Everyone said he was gruff all the time, but he was being so careful with Spencer, speaking to him like... like he was a hatchling. He understood what was happening. He wasn't even that surprised he wouldn't be allowed to go with his mother, and he didn't want to go back to his home after what had happened there today. But the Nook...?
It wasn't like he minded it, but....
There weren't any other options. He had no other known family.
So he braced himself to face the loudness of the Nook, letting Russel take him home to collect the most important things he owned and making sure everything was locked up tight when they left. He tried to think of the bright side of things:
I'll be able to meet more wynglings....
Maybe I'll see Dipper more?
I'll be closer to classes. Even if I think I don't need them, who knows? I might find out something new.
Still. Saying goodbye to his mother, watching the wagon she was on disappear into the distance before letting Russel lead him away.... It was one of the hardest things he was sure he'd ever do.
