Description
It happened in a night, as things of that nature usually did. It had been hard to keep The Next Chapter afloat since the deelagun attack, if she was honest - it had luckily escaped with minimal damage compared to other shops in the district, and with the magic she knew it had been fairly easy to clean up. But a lot of gros in town didn't have the money to come by and purchase books when they were spending it all on getting their homes and shops repaired, and it put Tabbris's business at a risk. She knew what she could do, though - she'd done it before. Even in desperate times like these, there were some wyngrew willing to pay very well for a surrogate when they wanted to have a child of their own. There was always the risk that they were doing it just for an easy lock, so Tabbris made sure to set her price high enough to ensure it wasn't just a cheap lay to them and demanded payment before the lock. She also did what she could in the way of background checks, but that was mostly just talking to Ash to ask if he'd seen them there before and what they'd acted like. That cut out a lot of wyngrew, actually - he'd told her quite a few of them were in the bar chatting up cute girls almost every night. Her steep price turned most others away. It took her a couple of weeks to find someone she was satisfied with, someone she was sure really, truly wanted an egg, no matter the cost.
He was kind and polite and made sure she was comfortable through the whole process, though she clarified to him beforehand that she was a lesbian, and it was probably going to be awkward and difficult to complete the lock because of it. He was patient, though, and the following morning she had been able to assure him from her previous locks that she was eggbound. She developed a schedule for the two of them to meet up so she could inform him of the progress of the egg's development and eventually hand it over to him when it was laid.
She was glad to hear that he was alright with the schedule, and glad to see that he appeared for every one of the meetings. He ran late a couple of times, worrying Tabbris at first, but he always made it.
Apparently he had a good job as a butcher, supplying much of the town with high-quality meats from his farm, and that was how he had afforded her fee. "I sold one of my female rattlers for this kiddo," he chuckled, touching her swollen abdomen after she gave him a nod for permission. "I wouldn't trade anything for it, even if I could get my right leg back from the belly of that beastie."
He said something that made her laugh then, and that was the moment she was completely confident that he wasn't going to abandon the egg that was growing inside of her.
And the next time they were scheduled to meet, he didn't show up.
She convinced herself, nervously, that it was a mistake, that he'd gotten the date wrong or some other mix-up. They'd had to meet on a different day of the week because he'd had a prior arrangement at the usual time that was of the utmost importance, but something didn't sit right with her. For him to miss the meeting a week before she was supposed to have the egg - but no, he was so eager for it. He wanted this child, he said so himself, multiple times.
Over the next week she kept showing up at the cafe they met at, ordering a tea and sitting outside for an hour or so. She kept doing that until the day she had her egg - her egg, which refused to stay dry, which Doctor F proclaimed was because it was a finn. It would need to be kept wet to make sure it didn't dry out, he informed her.
As she walked home with the egg later on, holding it close to her heart in its pouch, she couldn't help the worries that crossed her mind. She didn't want to give this egg up to the nook. She had admittedly become attached in the time she'd nurtured it and talked about it with its father, and knowing it was a finn egg, she was acutely aware that it might not always get the special attention it needed in the nook.
"I suppose I've been wanting an indoor bath for a while," she finally sighed, tallying in her head what it would take to add another room onto her house for the finn, or redo one of the current rooms to be suited for it. Thankfully book sales had been picking up again, and she had a bit still saved from the surrogate fee. If she did most of the labor herself... if she was able to, that is... it shouldn't be that hard.
She inhaled deeply and then sighed. Even if she WAS able to do something like that, what would she tell Hadi? How would she explain that she was keeping an egg that she'd been telling Hadi was meant for someone else? She knew that her daughter already had a hard time trusting her sometimes - she didn't blame her, knowing it was hard to be left at the nook with no one to claim you. It was fair, but she didn't want Hadi to think this was on purpose. She would have to be careful to explain what had happened, and... perhaps it was time to offer again that Hadi join her in her home. It would be hard to support two growing wynglings, though, and what if they didn't get along?
This was too much to think about when she'd just gone through the very intense process of laying her egg hours before. She would sleep on it that night after getting her baby home safe, and she would find the solutions to these problems in the morning.
