Description The finished Thing illustration. The figure of Ben grimm was rendered in ink on 11x17" smooth bristol plate. The floating heads in the background were drawn with "B" graphite pencil. I drew Ben in a fighting stance to show off his tenacious nature. The heads above him represent many significant characters in Ben's life. There wasn't enough room to include everyone important in his life. Unfortunately Ben's nephew,Franklin, Thundra, Lockjaw, and many others didn't make the cut. If I had my druthers, I'd have included H.E.R.B.I.E., Aunt Petunia, Willie Lumpkin, the rest of the Inhumans, the Sandman and a host of other characters in there, but such is the way of the world. Regardless, I did my best to include a good mix of heroes and villains. I did manage to sneak in Wyatt Wingfoot (a personal favorite) at the last minute!

I wanted to keep the pencilled heads above Ben's figure because I felt that added a little symbolism to the illustration. Ben is a man-monster who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, so I tried to tip my hat and acknowledge that aspect of the character in the layout.

This illustration was done for my good friend, Steve Funnell, AKA Brokenhill , the world's biggest Thing fan! Hope you like it, Steve. Don't take any wooden nickels, ya Yancy Streeter!

this piece is reminissant of the 60's and 70s comics in so many ways! i love the kirby feel to this piece! YOU TOTALLY ROCKED THIS PIECE! Tho you drew the monster, the bground heads shows ben's human side without actually seeing the man himself!

I was about to say a combination of Kirby and Ditko but still a very personal style.

very very very nice Loston... very Kirby-esque in some ways. Done the character justice and pride.

Dude.

Should Marvel ever regain some interest in the old house style for a new relaunch of the Fantastic Four comic, you should put yourself forward for the gig.  You capture a lot of what the title looked like under the pens of Kirby, Buscema, Buckler and Sinnott here.  I'd pick up the title in an instant, if that's what they'd offer for a year or two!

I'd love to do that, but I have a sneak suspicion that Marvel things of retro stuff as being a little corny and dated. Too bad. I love the classic era. It's called "classic" for a reason.

He's better than Frankenstein--he's the Hulk! I really love the original, Kirby Hulk, so it was fun to add him in.

This might be the most impressive piece I've seen by you, Loston. It looks like it taken out of a Marvel comic in the freakin 70's. This is a chilling fusion of Jack Kirby and Big John.

I know a guy that should be writing a Thing solo book for Marvel. You sir, should be drawing it without a doubt.

Just stellar.

Oddly enough, this is how I normally draw Ben, Doctor Doom and the Hulk. The rest of the characters, I draw a little differently, but Kirby's stamp on those three particular characters is really the way I see those characters in my head. Appreciate the nice compliment!
