Description
The Other Ones is a band comprised of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead. After Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the rest of the band retired the name “Grateful Dead” and in 1998 began to play under the name “The Other Ones.” The following is an explanation of what I was thinking when I created this image:The guy in the middle is a rebel (Confederate Soldier)....you know, if you think about it, the Confederates during the Civil War could have been considered the "other ones." The Confederates also rebelled against the status quo. Traditionally we don't consider the Confederates to be too nice, but I wasn't really thinking of that when I drew the image. I was thinking of an image that represented a departure from the mainstream. The name, "Grateful Dead" isn't really a name that conjures up peace and love either. If you've experienced the Grateful Dead and have felt the love present at a show or felt through their music, you probably understand and appreciate how the name "Grateful Dead" is sort of an oxy moron in the sense that the name is actually the opposite of the actual experience. So, the rebel in the picture is meant to be both an oxy moron and a representation of the Other Ones simultaneously.
Not to get too much into a history listen, but the Confederacy also represented a more agrarian lifestyle, and opposed the big business attitude of the North. The slavery aspect of the Confederacy is definitely an unfortunate part of the South’s lifestyle, but the North certainly weren’t angels in every way either. The rebel in the picture is also supposed to have some Native American features; this is how I was trying to back away from a truly Confederate image. Native Americans followed a lifestyle that was much more at peace with Mother Earth compared to anything modern society has ever realized.
So, if you look at all the nuances of the image, it should make some sense and hopefully provoke some thought. Then again, maybe I’ve just smoked too much pot and I’m way too out there for anyone’s good. Burn one and take another look. Then the picture might make more sense to you.
I hope that sheds some light on why I created the image.
Peace!
