Hello and welcome to ~Toadstripe week~Day 1
So Toadstripe here is a character I feel like I've neglected a bit. He's Icejaw's son but he was more or less an NPC background character for the longest time. Recently I gave him a bit of a redesign that honestly made me like him a lot more and got me wanting to flesh out his character and, figure him out. A lot of characters I make, I go in, knowing who they are and what their role is going to be but with him, it's kind of different. I'm learning who he is. I have so much context around him and the bones of a personality but now I'm starting to like, deep dive into what does that mean? How does he see the world and how do the events that have taken place, revolving around other characters effect him personally. There are so many relationships I have to get into with him, but let's start with his namesake.
So Icejaw used to have two brothers (three technically but he doesn't remember Briarkit) and when they were apprentices, they left camp when they weren't supposed to, trying to catch up to their aunt, only to be caught in a storm resulting in a bit of a mudslide and the death of Toadpaw. His body was never found but Icepaw saw the mud overtake him and drag him away.
Icejaw wanted to name one of his kits after his brother, it's a bit of a custom in Marshclan to name kits after their ancestors/family members. Honeypetal found it a bit, weird to name a child after a dead person, but didn't object. For Icejaw, Toadpaw never got to live a full life, he never got to get a warrior name. So his hope was his son would live the full life his brother never got to.
As his son grew though, he was reminded less of Toadpaw who was timid and quiet and more of his other brother Hawkthorn. He was, bold and outspoken, headstrong...rash. Which lead to his death as he tried to avenge their mother in an attempt to kill the monster that ate her. He didn't succeed. Icejaw can't help but see both his brothers in Toadstripe and has on occasional slipped up and called him by either of their names.
Of course, Icejaw isn't really one to talk about his past, he's only ever said he was named after his uncle. Everything else he knows he learned from his great aunt Rabbitthorn, though of course even that doesn't piece together a full story for Toadstripe to understand. He just gets the sense that sometimes when his father is looking at him, he isn't seeing him, he's seeing ghosts. Like he's living in the shadows of people he's never even met. He wants to be seen as his own person and not have things that didn't even happen to him effect how other people treat him.
His relationship with his dad is civil but not, strong. He respects him but he's not close with him. They were a bit closer when he was younger and when his dad first started teaching him battle training, which resulted in the scars on his face, something he wears with pride, but Icejaw who had always been tougher on him than his sisters sort of took a step back after that. Toad never really got why, they're warriors, scars are just part of life. Icejaw had gotten scars from his own father, that's one thing he had told Toad, once. But since then and with Snowdove's unending drama and, Pollenblossom's absence, he's never really gotten close to his dad again. Talking to him is like talking to a rock. He just, doesn't... As a result, Toadstripe's become very self reliant and independent. Determine to live is own life and not go out of his way to share it with people who are too busy or caught up with their own things to take notice of him.
