Description It wasn’t very long until the doctor stopped at a set of locked double
swinging doors. He swiped his nametag in a machine in the wall and the
doors swung open. The doors led to another hallway. Rooms on either side
were secured by doors and similar machines to the one that operated the
double doors. We walked halfway down the hallway, the guard never
loosened his grip, it actually felt as if he tightened it as we walked.

The doctor stopped at a door on the right side of the hallway and again
swiped his name tag and the door clicked open. The room had a bicycle
hooked to a computer as well as a small rolling stool and a small
counter. We walked into the room and the doctor shut the door. It was
then that the guard released my arm. I rubbed my arm where he had held
it. My muscle sore from his tight grip.

The doctor sat down on the stool and set the folder on the counter and
turned toward me, sitting on the stool, “Please have a seat, Kin, “ he
said pointing to the bicycle, “You are in no danger. “

I took a glance at the guard whom had taken post in the corner nearest
the door and was glaring at me, “I don’t think I have ever felt
safer...” I replied letting my voice trail off and taking a seat on the
bike. “I take it the first one is endurance?”

The doctor nodded, “We will put a load on the bike every so often, all you need to do is pedal it, easy, right?”

I rolled my eyes and nodded once, “Yeah, seems that way.”I took a deep
breath in and let it out in a sigh. I wasn’t in my small white room, but
this wasn’t much better. This was a slightly bigger white room.

The doctor pulled out some sticky pads from the folder, stood up, and
walked up to me, “I need you to open your shirt. These will monitor your
heart, brain waves, and lungs. “ he said as he began placing them on my
chest, ribs, and forehead. One was placed on the back of my neck at the
base of my skull.

The doctor took a seat upon the stool once more and rolled it to the
computer, “Please place your feet on the pedals and your hands on the
handles. I will start you off with no load, and set the computer to
increase the load a small bit every five minutes or so. We shall see how
long and far you can go.”
The computer came to life as he turned it on. Beeping began, keeping
records of my heart rate and brain patterns. I took another deep breath
in and sighed once more as i placed my hands on the handles. My feet
were already on the pedals, ready to begin, “Just tell me when to start,
doc.”

The doctor smiled and nodded and I began pedaling the bike at a consistent
and medium pace. After five minutes, which seemed to take no time at
all, I heard the chain tighten and it got a small bit harder, but not
much. Again within no time at all it clicked again. It took a half hour
before I began to feel the burn in my thighs and calves. I had
‘traveled’ more than twenty miles so far and was still keeping at the
same steady pace as when I began. Sweat began to form on my forehead and
I could feel the need for water. I continued pedaling as I voiced my
need to the doctor.

“You will get a small squirt here in a short bit.” he nodded to the guard
who immediately left the room and returned shortly with a squirt bottle.

My throat was beginning to get dry and I had begun panting a bit. The
guard handed the bottle to the doctor who walked up to me. I opened my
mouth and he put a small squirt in my mouth. It tasted horrible, but it
was welcome to my dry tongue and throat. Every few minutes was a squirt
of water into my mouth. After about 6 hours, so I was told, the doctor
stopped the test.

“Alright. It is time for you to go back to your room.” he said scribbling fast
and hard on the file. Sweat poured off of me and my legs were completely
numb. A wheelchair came into the room and I was lifted from the
exercise bike to the chair. and pushed back to my room. I was thankful
when I saw the food already waiting for me there.

A nurse came in shortly after i was dropped off in my room, wheelchair
and all, to tell me that I had a shower scheduled in an hour and to be
ready. I nodded and grunted my reply through a mouthful of food.
